Pope John Paul II is eager to visit India in Oct. or Nov. but the Vatican is uncertain if the Indian Govt. will consent. A formal request is believed to have been made.

Former Union Minister, Eduardo Faleiro, is the Congress candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha (upper House) Goa seat Polling takes place on July 26. He is expected to win.

Concern was expressed in the Assembly at the apparent lack of enforcement of the ban on fishing during the monsoon, devised to give fish the opportunity to spawn. Fisheries minister Churchill Alemao, (a trawler owner) declined to take action and claimed that "the sea is not a lake for fish to remain in".

The Times of India. 14 July. Ruparelia Dhanesh (18), a British citizen was arrested for overstaying in Bombay. The Police said that they would launch a drive to identify other foreigners staying illegally.

Rediff 15 July. Monsoon lashes Goa. Heavy rains are likely in Goa during the next 48 hours. The Southwest monsoon has been vigorous in Konkan and Goa, and active in Madhya Pradesh
