Giese, a US-based Goan, said that overseas Goans campaigning for
the canonisation of Blessed Joseph Vaz will meet the Papal Nuncio
in Washington next week.
The
first batch of charter tourists for the season arrived in Goa
on Sunday 10 Oct. from UK. There will be 16 flights per week from
the UK, Holland, Finland and Germany.
The
father of Cortalim MLA, Mauvin Godinho, hanged himself. It is
suspected that threatening calls he received from the anti-Meta
Strips agitators prompted this.

(Mombasa) 8 Oct. 1999 East Africa Goans held a 3-day convention
at Mombasa in Kenya recently. There were nearly 400 participants
with 180 from Zanzibar, Dar-es-Salaam, Tanga, Arusha, Nairobi
and Uganda. The meet signals the spirit of a rebirth of a new

Oct. Sunday Standard (Nairobi) Following the murder of an Asian
on Friday, over 200 angry members of the Asian business community
shut their premises in the city and marched to the Central Police
Station to protest against insecurity in Nairobi. They issued
a two-week ultimatum threatening to permanently close down their
businesses if the Government does not improve security. [That
night in Nairobi thieves murdered another Asian].

8 Nov. and VHP, the fundamentalist Hindu party is campaigning
to get him to apologise for forced conversions. It is staging
a 15-day procession from Goa to New Delhi.

Guardian Oct. 12. Cabinet reshuffle. Younger generation on the
move. New blood Cooper and Vaz climb the ladder. Keith Vaz, was
also promoted, taking over the politically sensitive post of Minister
of State, Europe. Mr Vaz, 42, became the first MP of Asian descent
to hold a ministerial post when he became the Lord Chancellor's
Junior Minister in May. Now in his new role he will be the first
minister of Asian descent to represent Britain on the top tables
of international negotiations.
