GOA NEWS
Meta
Strips is a copper re-processing factory that is about to be commissioned
in Goa. Scrap metal would be imported from the West. The waste
material is highly toxic and would pollute the area. The Anti-Meta
Strips Campaign has reached a critical stage. The fast to death
continues. Last Saturday activists turned violent at Cortalim,
burnt 3 buses and stoned 14 others. The Police fired into the
air, used tear gas and lathi-charged the crowd, making some arrests.
On Monday, a crowd of 8,000 demonstrated in the streets of Panjim.
The
Verna/Cortalim area was a battlefield on Tuesday when Police went
berserk and began assaulting innocent people, ransacking houses,
damaging property and once again opened fire. 21 people were hurt,
one critically. Several police and priests were among the injured.
Roadblocks were set up and buses stoned. The Government responded
by banning the assembly of more that 5 people (except for weddings
and funerals). Police reinforcements were drafted in from the
neighbouring States. On Thursday the Chief Minister ordered the
closure of the factory following talks with the activists. The
situation remains highly volatile. Details and photographs at:
