The leaked news of the proposal to secure a £10,000 bond from some visa applicants from the Indian subcontinent was greeted by outrage. UK sponsors of relatives and friends may be required to provide the facility.

Keith Vaz was plainly embarrassed by the leak which coincided with his official visit to India, billed to ease visa restrictions. The Indian PM and Foreign Ministers cancelled their scheduled meetings with him. The Indian Government is reported to be considering imposing reciprocal restrictions on British citizens wishing to visit India. The British High Commission in India quotes Keith Vaz as saying that the project is in response to proposals from minority ethnic communities in the UK.
