It
is surprising that there are still some tickets left for the Cruise
Dinner Dance on 22 July. Regular Thames Cruises charge £70
each for an indifferent 3 course meal and cruise. This one is
£16 ( members) and £18 (non-members). Dinner will
feature Goan specialities and exotic tropical salads. It will
be a night to remember for many years to come. Tel. Edna Moraes-De
Souza 020-8672 1973 or Flavio Gracias 020-8723 1322. See also

Goans Website: Thanks for the pointers to various Goan Association
sites. I should have made it clear that we are working towards
an Internet Community gateway with links to accommodation, restaurants,
sightseeing, services for the elderly, yellow pages for Goan businesses,
immigration advice, etc. I am still trying to find sites offering
such information to other communities.

All
week. Times of Malta. Malta has been embroiled this week in the
Edgar Fernandes Controversy. For the background to the case, see:
http://goacom.com/goanow/99/july/probe.html
The newspaper reported:
Edgar's
sisters & brothers, Genny, Fatima, Maria, Jerome & Mathias
flew to Malta on 26 June to seek a solution.
Malta's
Justice Minister at a Press Conference claimed that there was
no option but to deport the murder suspect to Egypt.
Two
officers from Scotland Yard's Racial and Violent Crime Task Force
flew to Malta after taking on the case.
The
Maltese Parliament heard a plan for the Edgar Fernandes controversy
to be used to push for the drawing up of an international convention
providing for the setting up of regional courts for suspects wanted
for murder by countries with the death penalty ...
Pamela
Hansen in an editorial wrote " there is nothing they ( Edgar's
family) can do. You are offered sympathy but no solution. You
might think this sounds like a BBC television drama. Unfortunately,
the Fernandes family are living through the drama."
Keith
Vaz, British Minister of Europe arrived in Valetta on 4 July regarding
Malta's membership of the European Union and made it clear that
he would also be making representations on behalf of the Fernandes
family…At the end of his visit, Keith Vaz indicated that
Britain is proposing that its Attorney General convenes a meeting
with representatives of the Maltese and Turkish governments in
a bid to find a solution to the Fernandes case.
Prof.
John Buontempo, Former Maltese ambassador is to mediate in the
Edgar Fernandes case. He is trying to find a solution modelled
on the Lockerbie case where the trial of the two Libyans accused
of the bombings is held in a neutral country.
