The
Croydon Advertiser had a fuller report regarding the conviction
of Celina Rodrigues of Thornton Heath of attempted murder (reported
in the last issue). To quote from their report: Tanya Ossack the
defence lawyer "blamed her client's problems on her strict upbringing
in Goa for her problems. She said that her mother, a stern Orthodox
Catholic, had subjected Rodrigues to torture on her 18th birthday.
She had been chained to a bed for 11 days after she was discovered
to be dating a Sikh. Rodrigues's mother had then invited people
from the village to see her daughter whom she branded a "whore."

Combating West Nile Virus A prominent Goan who has been in the
news recently is the Ontario's Chief Medical Officer. With the
possible outbreak of the West Nile Virus in Ontario, Dr. Colin
D'Cunha and the Minister of Health had to call a hasty Press Conference
to allay the fears of Ontario citizens. The West Nile Virus found
on dead birds is reported to be carried by mosquitoes and can
sometime be fatal to humans with a weak immune system. Dr. D'Cunha
comes from Mumbai.

GoaNet is seven
Hi
GoaNetters: It's past mid-night here in Goa, so here's to wish
GoaNet a happy seventh birthday for August 25, 2001. Our founder
Herman Carneiro, a young man busy changing careers (from Kodak
to medicine!) is probably somewhere in the Far East. So let me
quote him...
"GoaNet
was launched on August 25, 1994, in Boston-USA, from an 18-year-old's
Unix account at a time when mailing lists were virtually unheard
of. GoaNetters were asked to flag with an asterisk e-mail to be
forwarded to GoaNet. GoaNet has come a long way then... GoaNet
has been, from the start, more than strictly a mailing list. It
is a virtual community."
At
the outset, the list comprised of approx. 20 members whose names
and e-mail addresses had been acquired via Internet Relay Chat
(IRC)..Looking back with nostalgia, one has to say a big 'thank
you' to GoaNet and the community out there -- for the fights and
friendships, jokes and jibes, smiles and sadness that you've brought
onto our faces over these years. ..One recalls dreaming that the
GoaNet figure of readers would touch 2000 someday. Today, we're
well over that... and growing with the GoaNet family having a
combined membership of 3000+. Let's look forward to growing to
5000+ -- an attainable target, specially if we get some good ideas
on what readers out there want, and new strategies for growing
in readership. Regards, FN
