The EGM/Adjourned AGM/EGM of the Goan Association (UK) was held
on 21st Jan. at Archbishop Lanfranc School in Croydon. All the
business was completed and in marked contrast to past AGMs the
discussion was very civil. It is hoped that this marks a sea change
in attitude for the future. Richard Fernandes was elected Finance
Director.
President of the Goan Association, Flavio Gracias, attended a
reception hosted by Foreign Office Minister Keith Vaz at the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office. At the reception, Patricia Rozario sang
four songs including a Mando.

*Coventry Evening Telegraph; Jan 20. The children at Park Hill
School in Kenilworth have been working on a creative scheme which
combines fun and learning, devised by Park Hill deputy headteacher
Maggie Booth. It has proved such a success that she has been invited
to attend a five-day Commonwealth conference in Goa, to speak
about the scheme. Now Mrs Booth needs to raise sponsorship to

The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, today informed the state
legislative assembly that his government's policy was not to allow
foreign funding for restoration of heritage monuments but to make
an adequate fund available for the purpose. However, Mr Parrikar
said that the government has no power to block the foreign funds,
if it comes through proper channels
Archbishop Ivan Dias of Bombay has been made a Cardinal by the
Pope.
The Indian Navy has opened its nine-hole 70-par golf course at
Dabolim to visiting foreign tourists in Goa.
Chief Minister Parrikar has suggested the construction of a modern
international stadium near the Four Pillars at Santa Cruz.
PriceWaterhouse Coopers has advised Goa to tap the information
technology sector immediately to overcome the "inherent constraints"
to industrial growth.
The Minister for I T, Ramakant Khalap, outlined a multi-pronged
thrust to make Goa an "intelligent" state by proposing
a "cyber city" at the Mandrem-Morjim plateau, an information
technology centre at Dona Paula and an info-tech council.
The Government announced the stepping up of surveillance to identify
and deport foreigners who overstay in Goa.
According to police sources, wearing of helmets by two-wheeler
riders is likely to be made compulsory within the next two months,
following an order passed by the High Court.
The Australian cricket tour of India will conclude on April 6
with the fifth and final one-day fixture in Goa.

*Leicester Mercury. A Leicester school is forging links with
teachers and pupils in Goa. Rushey Mead School wants to work with
people in Goa on sports and environment exchange projects
The
school also hopes to encourage pupils from Goa to travel to Leicester
and to take part in football and table-tennis competitions and
coaching
The link began through work done by Rushey Mead
head teacher Steve White and a Leicester friend, Mario Fernandes.
Mr Fernandes went to school in Goa but now lives in Leicester
and is married to a former Rushey Mead pupil. He attended the
website launch, along with another member of supporting organisation
Goa International, Rene Barreto

Goa. This is the first time that Apollo has tied up with a resort,
