Jo-Ann
D'Costa gave a captivating performance last Saturday in the finals
of Soapstars, (ITV). The programme showed her at home with boyfriend
Wayne and parents Tony & Sally. Her sister, Wendy, missed
the live action as she works for Continental Airlines and was
in New York. Shame Jo-Ann was not selected, though she is appearing
on C4 Big Breakfast all this week. If you thought Tony & Sally
looked familiar, yes, they are regulars at the Goan events. Tony
is the son of late Joe and Bertha D'Costa (East African Airways,
Nairobi). Sally is the daughter of Reggie and Latina Coelho also
of Nairobi.
One
consequence of the Anti-Muslim sentiment in the aftermath of the
terrorist attacks in the US is that the Catholic Goans in the
West have taken to wearing the crucifix rather prominently!

to the events of September 11…When dinner reservations sank to

carte dinner menu Pounds 15 for three courses, regardless of what
anyone chooses," he explained, a saving of 30-50 per cent, until
the end of September. "We have been serving 70 to 80 customers
ever since." …

Sep. Business Times (Malaysia). Tony Fernandes, [ex UK], the new
CEO of Tune Air, Malaysia, is to offer cheap no-frill domestic
air travel for Malaysians by January. He has invited former Ryanair's
director of operations Conor McCarthy to come on-board as consultant
and investor. He is modelling his airline after the British value
and lifestyle oriented Virgin Atlantic, on which he has insider
knowledge thanks to his stint as an accountant in the Virgin Group
in the 1980s. He would not disclose his backers, but did not downplay
speculation that Tune Air may have a tie-up with Virgin Atlantic
and its flamboyant boss Richard Branson.

Sep. The Independent. … you can go to Bradford or Oldham and find
a road where one side is entirely white, and goes to the Roman
Catholic school, and the other is Asian and goes to a state school
which is de facto 100 per cent Muslim. But, when it comes to church
schools, those are the exceptions. In the larger cities Catholic
schools are among the most polyethnic, with large populations
of African Caribbean, Chinese, Goan and other pupils among the
white majority…

Oct. Evening Mail (Birmingham). Goa for longer the next time!
By Edward Stephens. Goa is unlike the rest of India. The pace
of life there is slower…even if they are poor the Goans are warm,
helpful and friendly …a number of British holidaymakers I spoke
to go every winter…Goa has some stunning scenery and much of it
is still untouched by mass tourism …The only downside to visiting
Goa is the sight of numerous stray dogs and the aforementioned
hawkers on the beach…1010 words. Full text at www.goacom.com/goanet

... it is a labour of love. Goan cuisine also offers the famous
