From
Flavio Gracias: The Goan Association UK - Senior Citizens Lunch
on Sunday 7th October 2001 saw over 100 of our Senior Citizens
enjoy an appetising aperitif of "caju feni" punch, followed by
a delicious 3 course meal and a warm cup of tea. Music was provided
by Canute Aguiar and the Goan Cultural Society, managed by Gregg
Carvalho, gave a special "free" performance of Konkanim songs.
Our thanks to Concy Fernandes and her family, who catered for
the occasion.
In
the emergency Commons debate on terrorism, Keith Vaz has defended
British Muslims after Baroness Thatcher said she had not heard

Oct. The Australian. Goa, with its internationally renowned beaches
and centuries of Portuguese flavour, has begun to attract people
from Australia and packages are being tailored to meet the needs
of this market. Allan Fernandes, a marketing services consultant

changing people's impressions of India. It had a terrible image
and we wanted to create the image that India is a big country
with a lot of choices. There is a little something for everyone."

Oct. Herald. Jambo, Jambo, Karibu! Marc de Souza on his Kenya
holiday. Quote: …Goans in Kenya are held in high esteem by the
locals. They've carved their names for posterity in all fields.
I made it a point to visit the Goan Institutes both in Nairobi
and Mombasa. They are huge, having playgrounds and all modern
facilities. The names have been changed to Nairobi Institute and
Mombasa Institute. Both are still monopolised by Goans. Goans
who have taken Kenyan citizenship, appear to be quite content.
Why not? They say they are there where they ought to be. The Goans
I met in their homes and in the institutes live a life of abundance…Full

Oct. New York Times. Celina D'Costa, a gentle woman in a traditional
sari, is vice president of an organization for Indians infected
with H.I.V. She is currently in Australia at the International
Congress on Aids. Celina D'Costa was apparently infected by her
husband in 1994. She quit her clerical job and devotedly nursed
him until his death two years later, - only to be rejected by
his family, with whom they had been living. They called her names
and refused to let her use the toilet. They said the presence
of someone with the virus in the house would harm their other
son's marriage prospects. She found a room in a hostel, but was
forced to leave there too when no one would share a room with
her. She then moved from Goa to Kochi. Full text at:

Oct. BBC. The Coroner at the Bournemouth inquest of Joleen Sketchley
recorded a verdict that she died as a result of a dependency on
heroin. In January last year Ms Sketchley was gang-raped while
holidaying in Goa. Her father Brian Sketchley, 54, from Rainham,
Kent, said his focus now was on getting justice for his daughter.
Mr Sketchley said a trial in Goa of a group of men for rape and
aiding and abetting rape had been postponed but that he was keeping
in contact with the Foreign Office. He said: "I just want to get
justice for Joleen in Goa."
