COMMUNITY NEWS

The premier event of the UK Goan calendar takes place on Sun. 4 Aug with the Festival - see events below. Attendance has averaged over 3,000 in recent years. Bus 264 (Tooting Broadway to Croydon) passes the venue. Maps and full travel details are at:

This year the Chief Guest at the Goan Festival will be Commander Joseph Da Gama (Royal Navy). He was born in Nairobi and joined the Royal Navy 24 years ago. He is a chartered aeronautical engineer and is married with three children. He is currently based at Portsmouth and is part of Navy's Ethnic Diversity Team. And if that was not enough, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1998.

The GoaNet-UK stall at the Festival will feature a display of recent Press clippings of Goans in the UK news. Also, you can tell us what needs to be done to make the newsletter more interesting and/or make a donation towards enhancing the service ( £10 suggested for the year ).

CANADIAN CORNER

From Alfredo Fernandes alf.fernandes@shaw.ca Raymond D'Souza was ordained in Canada on 20 July 2002. He is the son of Greta (ex-Mombasa) and Cedric D'Souza (ex-Uganda and Nairobi) of Calgary, Canada. Raymond was studying in Rome, prior to his ordination. Fr Raymond D'Souza is a frequent contributor to the National Post newspaper in Canada. From Lena Fernandes: On August 31, 2002, we will be holding the annual Nite in Goa function. This is one of the best attended functions of the year and the most popular. This year we are expecting a busload of guests from Vancouver and Edmonton.

From Gladys Pinto. Commonwealth Games. In the synchro swimming, Claire Carver-Dias, Goan by marriage to Douglas Dias, won two gold medals. BBC Report: …Carver-Dias showed no ill effects from a busy Friday, on which she sandwiched lunch with the Queen in between winning the solo title. Douglas Dias was born in Canada. His deceased father Cecil Dias and Grandfather Joe Dias were born in Nagpur. Douglas traces his Goan roots to Navelim. 27 Jul. The Globe and Mail. Spicy Indian chai tea has now elbowed its way into cocktail culture -- minus the milk. 1 Aug. National Post. Alison Fernandes, a merchandise planner for Gap Inc., and Irvin Remedios, an engineer with Highermarkets, were married on June 26. Father Michael Ronald DeCruz performed the ceremony at St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church, in Richmond. 138 Words.

1 Aug. Toronto Star. Vijay Pereira, a World Youth Day planner was in the photograph with Father Tom Rosica when Toronto's Mayor Lastman made the presentation of a ceremonial key to the city in appreciation of the services provided.

27 Jul. Western Daily Press. Bristol Auction Rooms. A Portuguese bidder, a specialist collector and six telephone bidders were among those battling it out at the auction for a fine 18th-century ivory carving of the Madonna and Child which was probably made in Portugal's colony of Goa. It finally sold for £6,600. Bath Chronicle of 20 July had estimated the value as £700-£1,000
