A Happy New Year To All!!!

Apologies for the late delivery of this issue, which was caused by Internet access problems.

Basilio Magno from Spain , author-composer of "Proud to be a Goan", will be in London with his wife Rosi to attend the Goan Extravaganza 2003 to be held on 4th January 2003 at Wandsworth Town Hall. He will also be attending the Sangolda Social on 31 December 2002. As a lone Goan in Spain, he hopes to meet some compatriots who may be able to talk with him in Konkani, which he is dying to do.

GOA NEWS HEADLINES

Abaye Karande clinched the singles and doubles titles in the Goa State Carrom Championship.

St Michael's Church, Anjuna, is contemplating on organizing retreats, meditations, discourse and other religious activities entitled Spiritual Tourism in the near future. The Church will be celebrating its fourth centenary on 23 Dec. 2003.

The Goa Police are distributing pamphlets to tourists visiting beaches, urging them to remain alert during their stay in Goa. The latest endeavour is a part of concerted move by the cops to deal with the threat of a possible terror-strike in Goa, as tipped off by the Israeli authorities.

India’s Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee is scheduled to visit Goa on December 29 for four days.

Morphy Richards have launched in Goa a range of products, which includes steam irons, coffee makers, toasters, sandwich makers and food processors. Products such as mixers, ovens, fryers, slow cookers, kettles and hair care and personal care products will be added later.

19 Dec. The Western Mail. Pat Hughes, Swansea actress has been invited to host a gala dinner for 200 people at a resort in South Goa. "I'll be doing a couple of humorous cabaret numbers and taking part in an exhibition of Portuguese dancing as well as performing some extracts from Dylan Thomas," said Hughes.

20 Dec. The Mirror. A Seaman who left his wife after meeting a girl in India was found hanged, an inquest heard yesterday. Tugboat captain David Williams, 48, was found dead near his new home in Goa, the Milford Haven hearing was told. He phoned his wife of 22 years to say he had met someone else. Verdict: Open.

21 Dec. Lichfield News. Nick Balmforth of Stafford fell victim of DVT after returning from a holiday in Goa in January 2001 following a nine-hour flight. The 63-year old spent weeks recovering in hospital after a multiple clot was found on his lung, and is now dependent on daily medication for the rest of his life.
