*The Evening Standard (London), Jan. 11, carried an article of 826 words and photograph of Patricia de Menezes who claims to have seen the Vision of the Virgin Mary in Surbiton every day for the past 17 years.

The haggis samosa was launched last Friday to coincide with Burns Night. "The filling was a fantastic blend of Scottish produce," said Herman Rodrigues, who owns Suruchi, an Edinburgh restaurant and was invited to sample it. "These samosas are very good," he enthused. "I would say that the haggis was quite hot, but overall the flavour was great - not too unusual. If Burns was living he definitely wouldn't be offended." Sunday Herald (Scotland). Jan. 20.

Leicester family, Yvonne Fernandes, her accountant husband Oliver and daughter Francine will attempt to live, for 6 weeks during Lent this year, on the national minimum wage. In their case this has been calculated at £40 per week each after bills. "I'm from Kenya and I've always cooked from scratch - that's the cheapest way.'' Yvonne declared. Francine, 27, said, "My boyfriend is also going to do it, so I won't be able to run to him to take me out at night." Francine's brother, Oliver, who now lives in Manchester, did it last year and persuaded his family to join the latest campaign. The family lives in Anstey and are members of St Patrick's Catholic Church, in Beaumont Leys. Leicester Mercury 31 Jan.

Jan 02. American Journal of Psychiatry, vol.159, p.43-47. Gender, Poverty, and Postnatal Depression: A Study of Mothers in Goa, India is the title of a study by Vikram Patel, Merlyn Rodrigues, and Nandita DeSouza which has just been published. Depressive disorder was detected in 23% of the mothers at 6-8 weeks after childbirth. The survey revealed that women who had daughters were more likely to be affected. Irish Times. 26 Jan. The number of backpackers worldwide is impossible to calculate, but you only have to set foot on the beaches of Thailand or Goa to discover that young people the world over are travelling in phenomenal numbers.

Guardian 28 Jan. Mark Mascarenhas of California shot into limelight when he bagged the coveted telecast rights for 1996 World Cup cricket and thereafter the 1999 ICC knock-out championships in Kenya. He was manager of Sachin Tendulkar and planned to open a chain of restaurants around the globe named after Tendulkar. He was killed in India in a car accident this week. 30 Jan. Lusa News Agency (Portugal). The two Portuguese experts examining Goa's Central archive have found that the documents are in better condition than they expected but there is cause for concern. They feel that the records should be indexed and digitised.starting with a three year pilot project.

31 Jan. Lusa News Agency (Portugal). The film "Languages - Lives in Portuguese" should be released by June this year. It features life in the Portuguese-speaking world and includes the story of a pao seller in Goa.
