Joe Fernandez, a Kenya-born Goan businessman from Ratoath, Co Meath, Ireland paid the EUR1,800 bill of Mary Harney's return flight to open an off-licence in Leitrim. Harney, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland was at the centre of a controversy after it emerged that the taxpayer might have had to foot the bill. Until the 1960s, the East Midlands city was mainly white, with a few Caribbean immigrants. Attracted by the city's hosiery and light engineering industries East Africans first boosted the ethnic population.

19 Jan. The Guardian. Travel tips. Sam Kirk writes: When travelling long distances in India, buy your train tickets from a travel agent rather than at the train station itself. We were hoping to travel from Goa to Kerala by train only to be told after queuing for an hour that there were no first-class train tickets available. Later, we were told by a fellow traveller that travel agents purchase most of the train tickets and sell them on to travellers like ourselves, hence the station being sold out. The fellow traveller said that he had come back from Kerala in a near-empty first-class carriage.

20 Jan. BBC. Canadian Deputy Prime Minister John Manley arrived in India from Pakistan for discussions on the need for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue. Manley's eight-day visit will also take him to Amritsar, Mumbai, Chennai, Agra and the western Indian "city of Goa."
