Downs Mail (Kent). July 2002, carries a photograph of Morel and Karin D’Souza with the announcement that they are the new Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Maidstone. The text reveals that Morel is a Kenyan who came to England from Goa, that he is a Councillor for the Fant ward and that Karin (karind@tesco.net ) is Finnish. Press photographer Francis Dias, [Ex-Mombasa and now in Bishops Stortford], had quite an International scoop at Nairobi airport last week. Sophie Wessex, and her husband, Prince Edward were met off a plane by the High Commissioner to Kenya, Edward Clay. She thrust her baggage into his hands treating him as a porter. Edward looked suitably embarrassed at his 37-year-old wife's behaviour. But Sophie seemed oblivious to it. The photographs were splashed in the UK Press and also carried around the world. Chevone Barretto, aged 10, daughter of Joelle and Flavian Barretto of Hanwell, West London beat over 13,000 contestants to become the Young Pavement Artist of the Year 2002. Chevone was presented with the award by Michael Rosen on 12th July at the Tate. Extract: …a group of nearly 300 young Catholics have come to Toronto to join the World Youth Day organizational offices. "It's been a blessing. I would certainly do it all over again," said Vijay Ryan Pereira, 25, who gave up a full-time job offer in his field of engineering and travelled from Ottawa to Toronto in April to work the phones as a World Youth Day registration supervisor. Matchmaker threatened. A lady who resides in Curchorem, has filed a complaint with the police alleging that Santosh Naik, whose marriage to a girl from Usgao she arranged, has threatened to rape her because his marriage hit the rocks within a few days.

9 Jul. Coastweek (Mombasa). The Franklin Pereira Coast Hockey League draws to a close at the weekend. This tournament was generously sponsored by Mr. Franklin Pereira, the Patron of the Coast Hockey Association. He is well known in the Kenyan sporting circles, being a Kenyan International player at both Hockey and Cricket in his hay days [sic]. Fondly know as "Franky", many sports fans will always remember his fantastic goals in hockey and the various sixes he scored in cricket. The Mombasa Youngsters Hockey team won the trophy this year.

11 Jul. Express and Echo (Devon). Axminster and district St John Ambulance is sending its old ambulance to Goa in the Far East, [sic] where ambulances are in short supply. The Axminster Lions, is sponsoring and arranging the vehicles transportation.

12 July. Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Profile of Francisco Xavier (Mickky) Pacheco, Goa’s new Tourism Minister. He is the first Non-Resident Indian (NRI) minister in the Goa state government. Mr Pacheco spent three years in Bahrain, where he worked as a fashion designer. 16 July. The Hindu. Tourists from various north European countries will be driving all the way to Goa and some other Indian states in a convoy of 14 of their own cars. German promoter, AC Verlag, organises such expeditions annually to various destinations but it will be the first to India.

16 Jul. The New York Times. The top chefs on their favorite food. Floyd Cardoz, executive chef, Tabla, 11 Madison Avenue: It's food from Goa, where my family comes from. The dish I like the most is the Goan shrimp curry with steamed white basmati rice…Just talking about it, I'm craving it. What's even better is the next day, you reduce it and eat it with fried eggs, sunny-side up, with French bread. So you never waste the spicy, tangy, shrimpy curry.
