COMMUNITY NEWS
DONATIONS APPEAL: It is proving
increasingly difficult for me to cope with the work and absorb
all costs of producing this newsletter. Enquiries from around
the world for information have to be dealt with. Surfing the Internet
for news and following leads to establish if some of the people
named are Goan is very time consuming. Dealing with subscription
requests, changes of e-mail addresses, restricting organisers
of events to 50 words and coping with changes to submitted text
adds to the pressure. It is your appreciation of the service that
has sustained me for three years but now I need to hire (in Goa)
part-time help. I also propose to enhance the service with a website
offering a range of facilities. The services will remain free
and without advertising. I therefore invite UK Goans and the UK
Goan Associations to make a donation - £10 is the suggested
annual amount from individuals. Associations can use their discretion
depending on the use made of the services. Cheques, made payable
to E. Fernandes may be sent to me at 1 Onslow Gardens, London
N10 3JT or handed in at the GoaNet-UK stall at the 4 Aug. UK Goan
Festival. All contributions will be acknowledged in the newsletter
unless you indicate otherwise.

19 Jul. Calgary Herald. About 7,000 Catholics were at McMahon
Stadium to witness the head of Calgary's Catholic Diocese, Bishop
Frederick Henry, ordain Malcolm D'Souza, and 3 others. D'Souza,
46, followed his parents from India in 1990, planning to work,
marry and raise a family. But one day in 1993, while driving on
Crowchild Trail, he suddenly heard "loud and clear"
something a priest had told him eight years earlier in India:
that God would first take him to Canada and then call him to the
priesthood. Shortly after, he entered the seminary, feeling like
he was "coming home."
21 July. The New York Times. Section: Travel: Toronto. Excerpt:
New this spring, Xacutti (sha-KOO-tee), 503 College Street, has
already been hailed as one of the city's best places to eat. In
a spare, elegant room, the fare is a inspired improvisation on
Indian themes. Call it Indian fusion - prawns in a lime mint curry
or Goan spiced duck salad are typical offerings. Dinner for two
with wine will cost $106. See: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/21/travel/TORONTO.html
22 July Maclean's.

in his native India, where he worked at a variety of jobs (hotel
receptionist, radio host, publicist) before deciding to enter

past winter to continue his studies; he intends to serve in the
Calgary diocese
