FLIGHT INFORMATION

Jun. Travel Trade Gazette. HEADLINE: Aircraft on Goa routes likely
to be redeployed. Text: Up to seven aircraft normally dedicated
to Goa charter flights over the winter could be redeployed due
to the threat of war between India and Pakistan. The aircraft
may be switched to serve the Canary Islands, Cyprus and Alicante
for the first half of the season if the crisis over Kashmir continues.
Cosmos commercial director Stuart Jackson said: "Goa is one
of the most popular winter destinations for the industry - there
are seven aircraft flying just to Goa. "We have two Airbus
330s and JMC has another two, but the season could be put back
to the end of December or early January if fighting continues."

June. Evening Standard. A 15-year-old Swedish girl, who cannot
be named because of her age, was sentenced to 30 months youth
custody after she pleaded guilty to importing 646 grammes of heroin
from India. She had been persuaded to act as a courier by "Henry",
a 23-year-old Nigerian, who she described in her diary as her
"boyfriend". The couple met in September last year after
a plan to open a restaurant in Goa with her mother was thrown

Because
of the onset of arthritis Miller spent three months in Goa last
winter, and he has now leased a house there. His plan is to go
to the Indian Ocean island for the winters and paint Goa's beaches
even though the light there is hazier than in Cornwall, and to
interact with Goans whom he loves to paint. "People in Cornwall
have time to talk to each other. And in Goa now it's as it was
when I first came here - children stop and talk to you."

Jun. Human Resources. Larissa Bannister on the Oriana, a P&O
cruise ship: I was struck by how efficient and friendly the Oriana
staff were. These men and women come mainly from Goa and the Philippines,
and work from early morning to late at night, seven days a week
for nine months - with only occasional afternoons off - for what
could be described as a pittance. There is, however, no shortage
of applicants for these cruise ship roles. The staff spend little
or no money on board and as one waiter put it, 'It means I can
send a lot of money to my family for two years and then go home.'
The effective use of cheap foreign labour is something that businesses
have to consider, and it worked well here although a number of
times I did overhear ethical debates on the poor pay and conditions.

Jun. Financial Times. Khalid Sheikh, who runs Clifton Packaging
in Leicester needed skilled labour for his factory so he approached
the British Council. The Council's Bond scheme places middle managers
and high-fliers from outside the UK into British companies and
arrange visas and work permits. Mr Sheikh, took on 10 software
specialists after a visit to Goa in India. "I was not prepared
to take a chance," he says. "I knew there was a surplus
of talent in India's silicon valley. I knew I could drive my machines
by tapping into that resource. But I did not want to be used by
anybody. I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing with."
The results have been startling. "These guys are so well
motivated and qualified that they do in two weeks what my guys
might do in six months. One machine started packing biscuits at
25 a minute. Now it's doing 53 packs a minute," he says.
