25 Jun. Human Resources. Larissa Bannister on the Oriana, a P&O cruise ship: I was struck by how efficient and friendly the Oriana staff were. These men and women come mainly from Goa and the Philippines, and work from early morning to late at night, seven days a week for nine months - with only occasional afternoons off - for what could be described as a pittance. There is, however, no shortage of applicants for these cruise ship roles. The staff spend little or no money on board and as one waiter put it, 'It means I can send a lot of money to my family for two years and then go home.' The effective use of cheap foreign labour is something that businesses have to consider, and it worked well here although a number of times I did overhear ethical debates on the poor pay and conditions.

27 Jun. Financial Times. Khalid Sheikh, who runs Clifton Packaging in Leicester needed skilled labour for his factory so he approached the British Council. The Council's Bond scheme places middle managers and high-fliers from outside the UK into British companies and arrange visas and work permits. Mr Sheikh, took on 10 software specialists after a visit to Goa in India. "I was not prepared to take a chance," he says. "I knew there was a surplus of talent in India's silicon valley. I knew I could drive my machines by tapping into that resource. But I did not want to be used by anybody. I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing with." The results have been startling. "These guys are so well motivated and qualified that they do in two weeks what my guys might do in six months. One machine started packing biscuits at 25 a minute. Now it's doing 53 packs a minute," he says. [The FT has a photograph of him and some of the workers].
