It was announced on 8 Nov. that ALL the telephone numbers in Goa will have seven digits from 10 Nov.! ALL numbers have to be prefixed by the number 2. For example, 123456 will become 2123456 and you will therefore need to dial 00-91-832-212-3456.

Equipped with a wide experience of working with AIDS centres and homes for the aged in England and South American countries Nelson Rodrigues returned to India seven years ago and found that Goa had a large number of street kids. He started ‘Shallom House’ which is in Chorao and houses around 23 kids. It subsists with paltry funds from foreign countries. Goa is to have computerised electricity bills soon.

Trouble is brewing up for people holding an international driving license issued in India. Some European nations, including UK have raised doubts about their genuineness. The matter is expected to be part of official of deliberations at the forthcoming international conference on driver training systems being held on November 15-16, 2002 in Goa.

A 59-year-old British tourist died at the Mapusa market on Tuesday evening. Christopher Neville Deaumont went there to purchase fruit and collapsed whilst doing so.

6 Nov. Oakleigh Monash/Spingvale Dandenong Leader (Australia). Taj On The South restaurant has been cooking up a storm since opening in July. Owners Oscar and Hazel Lobo offer a variety of tasty dishes from their Indian and Goan menu. "My wife has always had a passion for cooking. It is part of our culture," Mr Lobo said. The Lobos are from Goa…The restaurant range includes sorpotel, a pork curry that is hot and sour for $11.50 and beef or chicken vindaloo, marinated in special spices, for $10.50. Their speciality is nishtemshi kodi, a fish curry in mixed masala and coconut cream. Another option is samarem, in which savoury chickpeas are cooked in roasted spices and coconut.

12 Nov. Toronto Star. Feature article (2212 words), on Brendon deSouza who died of leukemia. in Sept this year, aged 12, More than 1,000 people attended his funeral. For text, click here.... Brendon was the son of Judy and Leonard (ex Nairobi). Judy's parents are Jack (Nairobi Heroes) and Natty Carvalho. Leonard's parents are Elma and Anthony De Souza, also ex-Nairobi. 13 Nov. Carlisle News and Star. Cumbrian chef John Crouch, who is also the Mayor of Allerdale, plans a special cookery course in Goa. Lasting two weeks and costing £2,200, the course is scheduled for 2004. 13 Nov. Kitchener-Waterloo Record (Canada). Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates has announced a $400-million-US investment in India. “It could take several months' income for an average Indian to buy Microsoft's software," said Frederick Noronha, founder of Bytesforall.org, whose group works for information technology access to poor people.
