Book Review of 'A Girl From Zanzibar'. By Roger King. $14.95, 320 pages. ISBN: 1885586604. Excerpts from New York Times: .entertaining novel about postcolonial migrants trying to survive in Margaret Thatcher's Britain .arguing with her forceful Aunt Stella, a pillar of the local Goan community. Aunt Stella, a Dickensian eccentric for sure, insists that Goans are ''really Europeans in disguise.'' ''We have European names, some of us have European blood. We've been European for 400 years. We eat beef. We drink alcohol. We ballroom dance. We're European.'' Naughty Marcella disagrees: ''Just because our ancestors were the first to jump into bed with the Portuguese when they arrived in India, doesn't make us European.'' 1082 words.

Under the Portuguese nationality law of 1975, persons born in former Portuguese India, as well as their descendants up to third generation, are entitled to Portuguese nationality. People have to wait for years in Goa just to submit an application. However 'agents' in Goa have set up direct links with Lisbon. There are hints of a move by the Portuguese government to amend the nationality law and stop giving passports to people from Goa, Daman and Diu. 23 Nov. The Guardian. Feature article on Christmas in Goa. By Louise Nicholson. Can't face another year of turkey and mince pies? 24 Nov. Ottawa Citizen. By Fred Donnelly. Last summer, I had the opportunity to sample Goan cuisine in a restaurant situated near the castle of St. George overlooking Lisbon. The experience was a reminder of one of those half-forgotten little places of the world. Who remembers where Goa is these days? It was a one-time Portuguese colony in India noted for its blending of European and Asian cultures. Goa is now part of India because in a little bit of post-Imperial housekeeping, the Indian army simply took it over by force in December of 1961. So the former Portuguese enclave is slowly fading back into "Mother India," a footnote in the history of imperialism, fondly remembered by such people as the expatriates now running a restaurant in Lisbon.
