Mar BBC News. Two boys who died when their stolen car hit
a police roadblock in a tunnel under the river Mersey were
unlawfully killed, an inquest jury decided yesterday. The
verdict at Liverpool coroner's court followed evidence that
Mersey tunnel police had ordered a lorry to block the path
of the 14-year-olds, who were said to have been driving
at up to 100mph. Coroner Andre Rebello said he would ask
that the tunnel police be trained to meet national policing
standards or that control of the tunnel be passed to Merseyside
police. Natalie Murphy.

LOOKING
FOR
From Madeleine Ensor, madeleine.ensor@dailymail.co.uk
tel- 020 7938 6120:
I am a researcher at the Daily Mail looking for a Goan family,
living in UK, with the surname Ferreira. The Daily Mail wants
to do a feature profiling a real life Ferreira family, to link
in with the new family arriving in EastEnders, also called Ferreira.
It would cover a page in the main body of the paper and I would
be interested to hear from anyone willing to participate.
[Note: Some particulars of the EastEnders Ferreira
family can be found at
http://www.goanvoice.org.uk/newsletter/2003-11/
It may be highly speculative but the thought is that the BBC has
selected a "Goan" family because the UK Goan Community
is too small, diluted and fragmented to effectively protest at
the excesses and stereotype casting of the screen characters.
Evidently the last Eastern family in the series were Hindus and
the producers had to be wary of the ethnic backlash].

THE NEWS
21 Mar. Karen'gata Chronicle
(Kenya). Low-down on Goa's high-life. By Francis Rodriguez.
I'm often asked about particular facets of Goan life from the
point of view of both the native and the foreign visitor. Goa's
night life is a frequent topic. Goans are forever partying and
merry-making, the quintessential Latins, feasting to gluttony.
Much of this comes alive at night, spiced with all manner of
music. Full text at http://www.africaonline.co.ke/karengata/news4.html
21 Mar. Business Week.
(USA). The War Edges Closer to Kuwait. Excerpt: Among the few
people on the street were Freddie Dias, 32, and Philip De Silva,
54, hotel kitchen workers from Goa and Bangalore. They were
seated smoking on a bench. Asked if they had thought about purchasing
gas masks, they said such items were out of their price range.
A full ensemble of gas mask, chemical suit, and other can gear
can run up to $700. These men make about $400 per month, sending
perhaps $300 to their families back home.

22 Mar. Brighton Argus. Former
Brighton resident and manager of the Indian national soccer
team, Stephen Constantine, 40, is preparing his team to play
in the war zone. He faces the daunting prospect of ties in Iran,
Jordan and the Lebanon during the Middle East conflict. His
wife Lucy said: "It's terrible at the moment as we don't
know exactly what is going to happen. I am worried but Stephen
is in love with his game." Mrs Constantine is remaining
at their home in Goa with their two young daughters Paula and
Christiana. They moved there from Brighton when Mr Constantine
took the India job last June.

Excerpt: Clarence Da Gama Pinto, the program director in leadership
with Mt Eliza Business School, says understanding and tolerance
of religious diversity needs to go further than the Australian
workplace. "Seventy-five per cent of Australian trade is
done with non-English-speaking countries," he says.

Going for Goans By Amit Roy. The BBC has announced that the
new Asian family in EastEnders will be Goan. All the Goans

26 Mar. The Evening Standard
(London). Restaurant review: TAAL, 247 Lavender Hill, SW11.
Chef is Pankaj Kalko, who was trained by the Welcome group
in India and spent 14 years cooking in Goa. Best of the main
courses we tried was king prawn periperi where the creatures
had been marinated in a Goan masala paste before frying and
were topped with chopped shrimps dry-fried with fierce spices.
Less impressive evidence of the chef 's stint in Goa was pork
vindaloo which lacked the sting of palm vinegar and was too
languid a texture.
