Sep. Leicester Mercury. Keith Vaz is going to Turkey next
month to try to ensure justice for the murder of Edgar
Fernandes. Mohammed Abbas Aly, who is accused of
the killing, is to hear the verdict of a Turkish court on
October 8. Vaz said, “I am going to Istanbul for myself,
as it is the only way to keep an eye on justice.”
Abbas Aly appeared in court on July 31 this year but, instead
of receiving a sentence, he was released on unconditional
bail pending the further hearing next month. Mr Fernandes'
family said they were disgusted Abbas Aly had been released
and feared he would flee the country rather than turn up
for the verdict. For full text, 461 words, click

Rajan
Narayan, editor of the Herald for over 20 years announced his
resignation this week and the launch of a new weekly, the Independent
Goan Observer. This followed the pressure applied after a report
critical of the chief minister's eating habits had appeared. “Every
16-page issue will have a four-page section in colour which will
provide continually updated information for the benefit of tourists
on where to eat, what to see, what facilities exist , what hazards
they may face, events including ethnic an cultural events that
might interest them – indeed, a complete regularly updated
and comprehensive guide for domestic and foreign tourist.”

Sunday Mercury (Birmingham). Holiday Home. Excerpts: Colin and
Susan Hattersley both aged 48 from Leicester returned from a two
weeks holiday in Goa after buying a new holiday apartment for
£14,500. “We stayed with my sister, who'd bought a
holiday home out there five years earlier,” said Colin.
Their new apartment includes a communal swimming pool, gymnasium
and landscaped garden plus 24-hour, year-round security. Colin
added, “the cost of living in Goa is so cheap it's almost
embarrassing. We've already booked a month off work ourselves
and we're due to fly out to Goa on Boxing Day. You can really
get good flight deals if you shop around.” For full text.

Sep. Stroud News & Journal. Cilla and Julian Bayliss,
first met Naveen Kumar, an orphan in 1999. His parents had
been killed in a scooter crash when he was just 12 and he
was working as a waiter. They kept in touch with him after
their holiday and offered to bring him to the UK. But getting
Naveen to England was to prove an almost insurmountable
task in the face of strict entry requirements for foreigners.
Finally in March 2003 he arrived. He has adapted to life
in England with gusto and winning friends wherever he goes
with a warm smile and down-to-earth manner. But Naveen's
student visa is only for 14 months and he will have to leave
next year - barring a miracle. Full text at

The Independent. If your idea of the perfect break involves sun,
sand and samosas, Goa is the obvious destination. There are lots
of other good beaches in India, but none that are so set up for
straightforward holidaying. Buy a cheap package deal, idle for
a few days on the sand and then spend the money you've saved on
setting out to explore the state's other attractions: 16th-century
churches, crumbling Portuguese mansions and upmarket fish restaurants.
One-week packages to Goa start from around pounds 425 including
flights from the UK, transfers and bed and breakfast accommodation,
with First Choice (0870 850 3999, www.firstchoice.co.uk).
