Sep. Basingstoke Gazette. Commander Joe
Da Gama has won the Endeavour Award in national recognition
for increasing diversity in the service. He left Kenya with
his family in 1969 at the age of 13. Cdr Da Gama said that
as a teenager in Basingstoke, he had been the victim of
bullying. “I lived in an area that was white and went
to school with white children. So we try to change to be
less visible. You can't change your colour but you can become
more integrated.” For full text, 370 words, click

Sep. Eastern Eye magazine. A look at possible Asian candidates
for an Eastern version of Calendar Girls. Excerpts: Ramona
Da Gama says “I feel great, more so since I've
given up smoking and taken up yoga. I look ten years younger
and I get chatted up by toy boys who are never over 34!
I'm having a ball now. 45 onwards, you've virtually achieved
what you want. People think I'm 34. To look after myself
I swim and I've joined a gym. I'm on a fat free diet and
do fruit juices. I don't get up with caffeine and cigarettes
anymore, I have hot ginger tea and gallons of water, at
least four litres a day. I'm always out, invited to clubs
for launches and bands. I have a lovely group of friends
and we're always meeting and going out.” |
[Ramona
Da Gama is the owner of a Jazz club, Blues West 14, in Kensington,
London. She was born in Kenya, the daughter of Raul Da Gama
(the lawyer) and Ruby Pinto, educated at Loreto College
Msongari, Nairobi and has a degree in entomology from Kings
College London. She represented Kenya in the World Table
Tennis Championship in Beijing and has had truly fascinating
careers.] |
