RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

"The ascendancy of communal forces in Goan polity is for everyone to see. Over the past few years, Goa has witnessed incidents which have a communal tinge to it." Find out more about this theme from a detailed article presented on Goanet by Subhash Gatade. It is titled Goa: Communal Tinderbox Waiting to Explode?"

A short piece by Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami, titled Goa Tourism vs. Tourism in South-East Asia provides (as the title suggests) interesting contrasts between the two regions. Ana was particularly impressed by the excellent travel facilities in Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore and Malaysia. In particular, the safety and ease of travel for her as a lone woman also impressed Ana. She asks, "Why can't Goa be a tourist destination with all the correct infrastructure like these countries?"

Easter drew many expected posts on its meaning and significance in Christianity. However, some posters felt that the Easter message had the effect of being forced upon people---especially on secularists, agnostics and non Christians. A lively debate emerged around this theme.

Do read an unusual but insightful article titled: How the Goan lost his Art. This is by Vivek Menezes. It tells us about Goan artists like Souza, Fonseca, Gaitonde, Laxman Pai among others and the sheer determination they needed to be accepted in the world of art. Accolades to their work invariably came after they died.

Finally, Albert Da Cruz has been featured on Goanet for his exemplary work and awards for Multicultural Community Services in Western Australia. Da Cruz " has spent over 30 years as a self-less, knowledgeable and committed volunteer who, with his inherent endearing nature, has brought many individuals, communities and organisations together to advance and promote multiculturalism, and work on strategies that overcome racism and discrimination."
