Wendell Rodricks: ‘We’re obsessed with
glamour’

Goa has enhanced my work … All the big boys of the fashion
world, Galliano, Valentino, Cavalli lean heavily on Indian
influences … Personally I prefer to design for the woman

confidence that my clothes give them is my niche market…
We Goans are possibly the only people who are so vocal and
proactive … I am proud that Goans are all politically
and socially aware. And when people call us sussegado (laidback)

East Africa: Asians Must Re-Enter
Public Life to Fight Racism and Xenophobia
17 Apr: The East African. Editorial. The recent Kampala events
conjured up images of 1972 when Idi Amin expelled nearly 70,000
Asians and confiscated their properties in a populist wave
… In 1960s and early 1970s East Africa, Asians had a
profile in public administration and politics that is inconceivable
today … now there isn't an East African capital where
a national of Asian descent occupies a prominent public post
… Today, most respectable Asian figures court a low
public profile or even "invisibility". There's no
longer an Asian voice in politics in East Africa to put the
community's side of the story or to defend itself against
xenophobic propaganda. To improve the situation, Asians will
have to re-engage politically again as they did in the 1960s.

Emerging Threats to Goa’s Communal
Harmony
15 Apr: Navhind Times. By Vidyadhar Gadgil. We have just passed
the first anniversary of one of the blackest days in the recent
history of Goa, on March 3, 2006. This day witnessed the first
organised communal violence, taking place in what has till
now been a relatively peaceful state. Starting from a dispute
over a religious structure, the issue snowballed and led to
unprecedented attacks on the Muslim community in the Sanvordem-Curchorem
area. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but property worth
crores of rupees was destroyed and looted, and many Muslim
families had to flee for their lives, returning to their homes
after many months. Even today, there is a noticeable atmosphere
of fear within the Muslim community in the area. 1376 words.

on an upward march and has appreciated further to 41.85 against
US currency, thus touching nine-year highs, following sustained
portfolio inflows amid absence of intervention of the central
bank. The main trigger for the dollar weakness has been the
weak business sentiment in the US. The dollar fell on Monday
against several currencies, including the pound, yen and euro.

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR
INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA
Find out about Mr Ulhas Buyao, popularly known as Goa Shahir.
He passed away on16/4/07 after a lifetime contribution to
Konknii (sic) lyrics, music and stage performances. Over
the years, he "had created his own unique identity
in Goan music whether it is the Bhajan, Kantar or a folk
song." Goanet has much interesting detail on this person's
versatile artistry.
A substantial debate is continuing on Goanet on the theme
of secularism. Not only have the terms secular, secularism
and non-secularists come under much scrutiny, the many interpretations
have also been examined diligently.
Once again, we have an interesting exploration into the
legends of Dona Paula. In an article by Blessy Thomas titled
The Legend of Dona Paula--Truth or Tall-Tale, we are provided
many new facets about this fascinating place in Goa and
the many legends about it.
There has been much reportage and discussion on the current
upsurge of violence against the Asians in Uganda. Many readers
of the Goan Voice (UK) are in the UK following the 1972
Amin purge in Uganda against the Asians. Only a handful
of Goans then remained behind in Uganda (including Francis
Braganza, a classmate of mine, whom I reconnected with after
five decades, thanks to Goanet), but the Asians were invited
back and many did return to resume business activity in
recent years. There appear to be complex reasons for the
current anti-Asian upsurge and Goanet posts provide much
information on this sad recurrence.
Glenn Costa states that, "in a development which could
have far-reaching consequences and affect the fortune of
many candidates and political parties, especially the national
parties, the Council for Social Justice and Peace, a church
body, has come down heavily on the concept of "winnability"
criteria in selecting [political] candidates." This
is an intriguing development and there is much discussion
from several posters on this issue on Goanet.
Finally, how much unused potential is there in all of us
and is it true that, "our true potential is a promise
lies sleeping?" Well, Pravin Sabnis, director of Unlearning
Unlimited, and based in Goa, has some secrets to share with
us on this issue on Goanet.
