Iraq: Constantine Rodriguez: An eye and a leg is the price of a pizza
29 Aug: The Scotsman. Constantine Rodrigues a quiet man from Goa was working at a Pizza Hut restaurant in one of the main U.S. air bases in Iraq, when he was caught up in an attack and lost an eye and a leg … As he lay recovering in hospital, all he could think of was the new wife he had left in India and the 7 1/2-month-old baby he had never met … The Pizza Hut's franchise in Kuwait, o ffers staff double pay if they go to Iraq. For Rodriguez, that was about $450 (£225) a month, enough finally to find a wife and start a family back in India after 10 years of working in Kuwait. The average per capita income in Goa is about $1,100 a year 700 words. Click here

Diana: An Icon Of Indulgence, By Fr. Raymond J. De Souza
30 Aug: National Post (Canada). It all seems rather surreal now, 10 years after the British people went slightly mad upon the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. From the beginning it was a tragedy to be sure … Soon it became a farce … The unhinged funeral week turned out not to be the beginning but the end. 853 words. Click here

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

Sebastian Rodrigues appeals to Goanetters to witness, from text and photographs, the destruction of the lakes around Mulgao by the mining activity of the Dempo Mining Corporation in Goa. He also exposes the Company's empty rhetoric on their website claiming commitment to the Environment. Sebastian states that, "Mulgao is one more village robbed of its water, economy, ecology, and agriculture... how many more villages are to be ruined this way by mining companies?" Sebastian has also provided information about other examples of exploitation by large Corporations in Goa/India.

In the UK, there are often cries for help on the Net from supposedly wealthy Nigerians who have fallen on hard times and are unable to release their monies without help from a foreign national. Hopefully, most of us have learned that these persuasive scams are to be avoided totally. However, some UK nationals have been taken in and lost money and this is to alert Goan Voice (UK) readers to be careful about how they respond to such seemingly genuine appeals for help that, promise substantial financial returns after initial financial help is first made to them. But such financial returns of course never materilise. Now it appears that such scams appear on the Net in Goa and F. Noronha has illustrated this rather well on Goanet.

Why is social drinking in public bars so frowned upon in Goa? Albert de Souza and Cecil Pinto, explore this issue at some length and perhaps GV(UK) readers will throw some light on this issue as pub culture in the UK is so much part of civilised living here. Indeed, we know of some Goans who returned to London permanently from parts of the USA and Canada because they missed the UK pub culture so much!

On Goanet, we are informed by George Pinto about the Ninth Biennial Goan Convention for the North American Goan Community to be held at the Silicon Valley, California, USA. It will be held, July 4-6, 2008 at the Holiday Inn, San Jose. The Convention theme is "Celebrating our Roots, Spreading our Wings." For more information, please visit www.goanconvention.com

Finally, on the 13th anniversary of the founding of Goanet, it is timely to congratulate the founders of Goanet, those who helped it grow, and the current hard workers on this Site. I am sure GV(UK) readers will wish it every success for the future
