Goa’s Inevitable Demographic

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta
Do read a fascinating account of a visit
to Pondicherry in South East India by F. Noronha.
The former French colony in India is renamed
Puducherry which means "new village" in Tamil.
It was also once known as the French Riviera of
the East (La Cote d'Azur d ('Est). For a range
of photographs of the region please see

The issue of faith run schools in different
parts of the world, contrasted with secular
education has raised many interesting points
on Goanet. I therefore wonder if younger
readers of Goanet and the Goan Voice (UK)
have unexpectedly found themes of interest
that would help them in their school projects?
An unusual article titled Gakuved (Gawada,
Kunbi, Velip and Dhangar Federation) observes
Human Rights Day in Goa, tells us about
the many disadvantaged groups in Goa and
the social and economic threats to them
because of intensified mining activity,
deforestation and lack of adequate water
supplies. The article is pretty revealing
about much devastation of natural resources in Goa.
Is there such a thing as a "Bamon Ladder"
in Goa? This topic may interest GV(UK)
readers and throw some light on the kind
of themes that do not ordinarily see the
light of day on Goanet or elsewhere.
While GV(UK) readers resident in the West
have been fortunate for a long time to
visit places of interest like Lourdes,
Fatima and Rome, it is nice to now note
that folks from Goa are beginning to
explore (or want to explore) such places
too. The development of charter flights
from the sub-continent to the West should
go a long way to help our fellow Goans to
see more of the world than they have been
able to do to date.
Vidyadhar Gadgill has presented Goanet
as well as the Gomantak Times (8/12/07)
a very insightful article on Insiders
and Outsiders in relation to Goa. He
offers so much to reflect upon and GV(UK)
readers are particularly welcomed to
respond to the article.
