GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta
Those Goan Voice (UK) readers who may be
unfamiliar with the Goan interpretation of
Droit De Seigneur, will be in for some
surprises on reading several Goanet posts
on this theme. It refers to the reputed
manifestation of 'rights' by powerful
landowners to deflower virgins of his choice
from among the poor tenant farmers on his
land. To what extent this is/was a fantasy
or reality is not exactly ascertainable.
However, if one wishes to see a measure of
mirth, or like me, downright fury over the
supposed practice, then it becomes necessary
to read the posts on this unusual theme.
After endless discussion on whether Goa
should have two airports (Dabolim and Mopa)
some firm decisions on Mopa seem to have
been taken from the details provided by
Abdul Rauf Beig (originally published in
the Navhind Times). They indicate that, plans
for a new airport in Mopa are well advanced,
including clear details of costings and
labour requirements.
I have always wanted to know details about
those Goans who migrated to Burma, as others
did to other destinations for economic reasons..
Now my wish is likely to be fulfilled! We
learn that a new book titled The Song of
the Survivors, edited by Yvonne Vaz Ezdani,
has been published with a great deal of
detail, especially over the period of the
Japanese occupation in 1942. I hope to read
the book, and hopefully, provide a review
for the GV(UK) soon.
A short piece titled To Bury the Dead by
Eric Pinto is perhaps not as morbid as
might be expected.The piece presents
insights into many rituals and practices
in different parts of the world and also
about the dilemma of a general shortage
of space for traditional burials.
Mark Tully, the 'likeable' Brit and well
known writer and broadcaster from India,
provides us a fascinating article about
his recent visit to Goa. It is titled
Altered Altars: Mark Tully on Goa,
Christianity and Change. This is a long
"must read" article that, is very well
written and highly informative in
Tully's distinctive style.
Finally, Christmas cometh and understandably,
interesting greetings are presented by
many as well as details about the
significance of Christmas itself and
the festive season as presented in
different parts of the worlds and
especially, in Goa and the Goan Diaspora.
