Roy de Souza: Tech trims down.
21 Jan: San Francisco Chronicle. Roy de Souza, founder and
CEO of Zedo Inc. shares inexpensive offices with two other
startups, upstairs from a "spa" that had been shuttered
after being raided by federal agents. Penny-pinching is a
bit incongruous for the San Francisco Internet and advertising
company that runs Zebo.com, a Web site devoted to young people
making lists of all the possessions and brand names they have
or want. But de Souza credits that frugal guiding spirit with
keeping the 7-year-old Zedo afloat when the dot-com bubble
burst. De Souza relies on friends for everything from business
leads to free furniture. He hires college interns who need
experience more than money. "You want to invest in the
technology and the product, not in furniture and whiteboards,"

appears prominently in the news to proclaim that there are
to be cuts in the police force. I live in Charlton Kings,

Bel Vaz is ex-Uganda. He writes to say that he has a racial
complaint against Gloucestershire Police and he is meeting
with Cheltenham MP, Martin Horwood on February 2nd to discuss
this & other issues.

The world's top secret beaches
18 Jan: The Times (UK). Twenty years ago, Benaulim in Goa
had one bar, a waiter called Gracious [sic], and pigs hovering
under the guesthouse long-drops. Today, there’s a
140-room Taj Exotica, a string of bars along the beach and
trinket-sellers mumbling “lovely jubbly”. If
that’s broadening the mind, I’ll stay at home,
thanks. Better still, I’ll find the new Benaulim.
Hop over the state boundary into Maharashtra, for example,
and the Konkan coast has the sort of beaches Goa grew fat
on — without the techno-raves. Goa may have the name
and the gorgeous Catholic churches, but it also has crowds
of idiots twirling ribbons on the beach. Not Ganpatipule.

no surprise that many of them have started buying real estate

Big Brother has exposed 'everyday
racism'
22 Jan: Yorkshire Post. The bullying which housemate Jade
Goody admits Shilpa Shetty suffered on Celebrity Big Brother
has exposed an "everyday racism" that is normally
invisible, according to Steve Spencer, a senior lecturer at
Sheffield Hallam University and author of several studies
of racism in life and the media. He said: "Racist and
xenophobic reactions like these 'private' conversations, broadcast
to a mass audience, are a bizarre inversion of the everyday
racism, the sneering comments, the cultural ignorance and
intolerance, which is commonplace in our society. The outrage
is warranted. But let's not fool ourselves that this is unknown
outside of the (BigBrother) house. Scratch the surface and
it's staring you in the face. 310 words. Click

How racist is Britain? By Julian
Baggini
23 Jan: The Guardian (UK). 'Paki." I can't honestly remember
the last time I had heard that word outside of a news expose
of the far right or a "hard-hitting" drama about
racism. That was until my first proper conversation in Rotherham,
when it was dropped into a sentence as though it were just
another adjective, like "tall" or "Italian".
Clearly I did not know Britain very well at all … 2602

Film Review: Sundance Film Festival: Chris Smith
& "The Pool"
24 Jan. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "The Pool,"
was filmed in Goa ... It is richly atmospheric and has nuanced
performances - the two young lead actors were street kids
- and a complex moral underpinning that makes "The Pool"
deeper than most other films. Click

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR
INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA
While some negative views have been expressed about the
recent Global Goans Convention (2007) in Goa, a fairly positive
view has been expressed, among others, by Celina Pereira
who attended the Convention from the USA.
How do priests in Goa subsidise themselves and their life
styles? Such a question has generated much debate and discussion
that Goan Voice (UK) readers should find quite interesting.
Comments on this issue would be most welcome by Goanet.
The much derided Regional Plan 2011 for Goa appears to have
been withdrawn after much concerted agitation from local
people. However, is the 2011 Plan really withdrawn or is
this no more than a "pacificatory move?" Find
out about such scepticism from an interesting article, among
others, by Dr Beverley de Sequeira.
Understandably, the experience of Shilpa Shetty on Ch 4
in the Celebrity Big Brother UK programme has featured extensively
on media across the world. However, Goanetters have also
presented their 'distinctive' diverse comments on the issue.
There appears to be much on Goanet currently about alleged
incursions into Goa by the Russian Mafia. A substantial
article on this issue, titled Molotov on Mandovi...the Russian
mafia in Goa is definitely worth reading for so much detail
within it.
Finally, do read a short article by Roland Francis, titled
Life Seems Cheap in Goa. He says that, "... in Goa,
the drowning of people that occurs with ...frequency especially
from Indian tour groups makes a minor dent in the local
press and people's reactions, despite the precious loss
of young life...it's almost as if ---what's another visitor's
life worth?"
