GOANET HIGHLIGHTS BY CORNEL DACOSTA

Goan Voice (UK) readers should find Mahendra Ved's article, titled Need a Break? Find your 'susegad' in Lovely Goa, of much interest because he provides a number of interpretations for our understanding of 'susegad'. Do let Goanet know if you agree with Ved and can also provide more stimulating interpretations for the word 'susegad'.

Is your surname on the Wikipedia free encyclopedia? If uncertain, do check from a long list of Goan surnames compiled by Jason Monserrate on Wikipedia (website presented below).

Goanetter Neal Pinto informs us about the production and availability of his new CD "21:21". Also, of interest is Neal's account of his role as a singer/songwriter in Winnipeg and Toronto, Canada. Find more about Neal at http://www.pintomusic.com or obtain his CD at http://www.rcdmusic.com/musicstore.php

Many Goan Voice (UK) readers were originally from East Africa and a little nostalgia may not be out of place yet again. Do read on Goanet, Mervyn Maciel's (2002) speech presented at the River and Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames, Oxford.

If there is one thing we probably can be certain about it is the 'raging' controversy whether 1961 in Goa represented a Liberation or an Occupation. This controversy has been encapsulated rather well recently by Aristo re the VCD on Goa by the Goa Education Department. Two sources provided by Aristo particularly caught my attention and they are at http://www.indialine.com/travel/goa/history.html Also, worth seeing is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/history-of-Goa. Hopefully, material in these sources will encourage GV(UK) readers to engage further in the controversy.

Selma Carvalho's very well written article titled Murky Waters of Secularism provides an insightful discussion on the dilemma facing many governments and societies in the modern world where there is tension between secularism and religious orthodoxy.

Finally, Goanetter Albert poignantly asks why it is that, so many well educated Goans, who could easily get good jobs in Goa and live well, still have the powerful urge to leave Goa for life abroad? This is an important and intriguing question and hopefully, many GV(UK) readers worldwide will share some of their thoughts on this matter on Goanet.

More details can be found at the Goanet archives at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ Or to subscribe to Goanet, send an email to subscribe@goanet.org
