RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

Did Pandit Nehru ever say that Goa was a land of cooks and butlers or perhaps something close to this view? Well, many minds have been severely exercised by this issue and Goan Voice (UK) readers could help resolve this uncertainty by communicating their views on this issue to Goanet.

Roland Francis has set a little problem to Goanetters as follows: "What if there were no obstinate Salazar...constantly refusing to let Goa become independent of both Portugal and India? What if Nehru had stuck to his own judgement and... not succumbed to Krishna Menon...what would be the situation today if Goa was to follow its own path from the history of time independent of Lisbon and Delhi?" Hopefully, GV(UK) readers will read Roland's short piece titled Goa and the Democratic Experiment, and then provide some thoughtful feedback.

On Goanet, Cecil Pinto never ceases to surprise us with original and insightful articles that he also publishes in the Gomantak Times. If this is in doubt, do read Mermaid and Nipple Advisory Mischief, Artistic Interpretation, Bad Taste or Pure Ignorance? Another of his articles is titled Drinking at the Art Fountain. This article names many in Goa, making a substantial contribution to art and the production of art works.

Once again, Domnic Fernandes provides a substantial article titled Padripon (Priesthood). This is Part 1 with more to follow in subsequent weeks. Padripon is basically about priesthood and priests in Goa. Much information is provided in Domnic's distinctive style on the introduction of Christianity to Goa by the Portuguese, different religious orders, the process of conversion to Christianity and how new practises were imposed on those converted. Further, the concept of priesthood and its prerequisites are explored in depth and what it really means to be a priest.

Finally, a short piece by Selma refers to the many paradoxes as when slums spread in Goa while across Goan hillocks, holiday homes are bought by mostly British people. Also, that a "Goan builder will have no qualms about telling you that he caters exclusively to foreign clientele." Further, that many a Brit is on a nice little earner by renting out his personal holiday home. The piece concludes by lamenting that the person losing out in all this is the local Goan. There is also a brief explanation regarding how this new form of capitalism operates.
