RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

"Each time I visit Goa, I hear more and more Hindi and less and less Konkani. And with Marathi given equal status to Konkani, it is just a question of time for Marathi to replace Konkani completely." This is a view expressed by Paulo Colaco Dias on Goanet. Do Goan Voice (UK) readers share this view?

Goan authors have received helpful advice from Victor Rangel-Ribeiro when publishers turn down a manuscript for a variety of reasons. Advice is provided about ways and means towards self-publication of books and the many pitfalls that can be avoided.

A lively discussion is on-going on the problems associated with plagiarism. While the definition of plagiarism appears to be quite clear in relation to hard copy material in books and articles, the advent of electronic media has thrown up particular difficulties vis a vis earlier conventions on plagiarism. This is discussed in a very illuminative way on Goanet.

Dr U.G. Barad has presented a substantial piece on corruption and communalism in Goa, titled: Goa is a Sinking Ship, Jump out Now. He discusses which is the greater evil of the two. In providing a statistic, Dr Barad states that Goa ranks third among the most corrupt states in India. He then goes on to a closer look at all aspects of the issue and says that, " corruption is the single major factor in keeping Goa poor and backward despite having the best natural and human resources...and that it is a major destabilizing factor in politics and economics."

Musician Colin D' Cruz of jazzgoa informs us that, The Brown Indian Band's Deshi Salsa, based on raag Deshi, has been selected as the theme tune for the Salsa Indian Festival to take place in Mumbai, 5 to 8 April 2007.More information on this is available at: http://www.salsaindiafestival.com. There is also an interesting explanation for the term "desi" or "deshi" to mean "local, regional or indigenous" as opposed to "foreign" and that, the term is used to refer to people or things of South Asian origin.

Finally, do read a lively debate on the pros and cons of call centres in Goa/India. Are they the soul-destroying means of earning a livelihood, or are they a welcome opportunity for young people? This is discussed in quite some detail.

More details can be found at the Goanet archives at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ Or to subscribe to Goanet, send an email to subscribe@goanet.org
