Way to Goa
28 Apr. The Mirror (UK). Described as India for beginners,
Goa’s European heritage can be seen everywhere from
the whitewashed Catholic churches that pepper the landscape

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR
INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA
For an excellent article about chess in Goa, as well as
chess players/enthusiasts, a 'must read' is Augusto Pinto's
Making War Into a Game: There's a Quiet Chess Revolution
in Goa.
There has been much appreciation as well as controversy
about the recent impressive Aparanta art exhibition held
in Goa. The divergence in opinion is best summed up in two
quotes from Goanet posts. "Aparanta drew a considerable
positive press..." "Modern Goan art is being celebrated
for all the wrong reasons..." Find out more from the
substantial mail received by Goanet on this issue.
The Goan Sudharop Seniors e-book is to be launched on 8,
May 2007.The idea of an e-book is an excellent one and a
large number of essays/contributions are expected in this
electronic book.
A book titled Kurponno consisting of 16 short stories is
to be published in Goa shortly. It is by Konkonni writer
Vincy Quadros who has been in the field of literature since
1980 and been the winner of the Konknni Bhasha Mandal literary
award in 1990.
Does Mumbai have a first claim on Goa? If you are intrigued
by this question, do read a short piece by Malavika Sangghvi.
The claim has a distinct persuasiveness of its own!
Richard Gere the Hollywood actor has been criticised strongly
by some right-wing factions in India for his public amorous
advances towards Shilpa Shetty. Some have suggested that
Gere be arrested and charged for such "outrageous behaviour".
However, many have ridiculed such a suggestion and referred
to the horrendous issues of bonded labour and caste discrimination
in India that, the right-wingers fail to notice because
of their blinkers.
Many Goan Voice (UK) readers will have known about Jacinto
Vaz--often referred to as the Charlie Chaplin of the Konkani
Stage. A tribute to this great Goan tiatrist by Edward Verdes
is featured on Goanet.
Finally, do read a short piece supplied by Gabe Menezes
(London) about the groom who arrived at his wedding too
drunk to get married. However, the family honour was saved
at the last minute when the groom's brother stepped into
the breach and married the bride instead! Shakespeare, in
one of his plays, may well have said (if I recall correctly),
that, "all is well that ends well." But as the
issue became a police matter, I wonder if the drunken groom
was simply expressing, as best he could in the circumstances,
the Englebert Humperdink catchy tune ringing in his head---"
Release Me (and let me go)!"
