Holiday Hot Spots
12 May: Hindustan Times. Media professional Pramit Sachdev
had no idea that his holiday plans for the summer would
be the cause of heated discussion at the office. "All
I said was, 'I'm going to Goa for a week'," he laughs.
"The next thing I knew, all my colleagues were debating
on when it's best to visit Goa. The consensus was: 'winter
is best, the monsoon is lovely, but summer? No!' And I was
advised to go to some nice, cool place instead." Sachdev
has no intention of taking that well-meant advice. He's
willing to concede that Goa will be blisteringly hot in
the middle of May. But it also offers him good hotels at
absurdly low rates; return airfares at a similarly cheap
rate; and in the evenings when it's cooler, he'll have the
beaches almost all to himself.

Paul Oakenfold: Trance Figure
13 May: Indian Express. Over a decade ago, an English deejay
came to Goa to be inspired by its sands, shacks and songs.
The result of that rendezvous, the song Goa Mix, is till date
the most requested broadcast on the BBC Radio. Now he returns
to India as the most popular and probably the most expensive
trance DJ — he reportedly gets £25,000 per gig
… Meet Paul Oakenfold. Age: 43. He says, “When
I visited the place in 1993-94, Goan music instantaneously
caught my attention. I fused it with my own style and sound,
which resulted in what I called the Goa Mix.” Click

Passage to India

Union College Professor Victoria Mukerji recently spent six
months in India teaching at Goa University … she said
this experience was unique because the university is located
in a region with a very diverse population … Among the
most significant observations in Goa, she said, was seeing
a "sleepy, beautiful provincial place turn into a playground
for Europe and Australia … it's a tidal wave of other
people with a very particular agenda … I was disturbed,
but also fascinated and plan on going back to research (that)."

new life
15 May: Times of India. First, there were the ‘coconuts’—brown

metaphor of choice for second-generation Indians in the West.

the immigration flow to make their homes, and hopefully their
fortunes, in the India their parents left half-a-century ago

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS. By Cornel
DaCosta
Find out about a re-vitalised discussion
on the issue of Creationism versus Evolution on Goanet. So
many new thoughts are expressed on this issue that is currently
sweeping across America and increasingly across Britain too.
Are we ready for the debate and discussion?
Following the production of the Goa Sudharop Goan Seniors
E-Book, it is hoped that Goan Voice (UK) readers will access
it at http://www.goasudharop.org/ebook/index.htm
as well as make comments on the 'book' to the producer, Valerie
Rodrigues at valeri@rediffmail.com
Personally, I think the concept and reality of such an
e-book is excellent. Hopefully, readers of GV(UK) will be
encouraged to make their personal contributions for future
presentations in an expanded version of this e-book.
There have been several outbreaks of communal violence and
tension in parts of Goa to now make the issue of communalism
a perennial one on Goanet. It is clear that this matter has
to be taken seriously if communalism does not take permanent
root in Goa. There is much currently written on this issue
on Goanet following recent problems in Margao. An article
titled Pitching for Peace (originally in the Gomantak Times,
14/5/07) provides much information on this issue, but equally
important, are posts that query official views about this
issue.
Perhaps the place of cultivation and agriculture in Goa has
featured much less on Goanet than one might have expected.
However, an interesting and highly informative article titled
Puri Sheti--a Unique Method of Cultivation by Bhiva and Costa
throws much light on this theme. It tells us a very great
deal about the vegetation, and especially, about the fruit
that is distinctive to Goa.
When Mgr Anthony Lobo, bishop of Islamabad--Rawalpindi says
"I appeal to the world to help us in this dangerous struggle
against fundamentalism" I believe that we ought to pay
attention to the bishop's plea from Pakistan. From a long
article on Goanet, we learn that Christians are threatened
that, they must convert to Islam or die. This message is purported
to come in a letter circulated to Christian communities that
requires them to close churches and convert to Islam within
a short deadline. The police think the letter is a hoax but
others like Bishop Anthony Lobo are clearly extremely worried
and treating the matter very seriously.
