Condolence Visits Increasingly
Discouraged In Goa
8 Nov: UCAN. By Bosco de Souza Eremita. Catholics
in Goa traditionally visit and console families
of dead relatives, but the practice is fast
vanishing … relatives are expected to sniffle
or cry each time a mourner comes in, since
failure to do so would be construed as lack
of grief for the dead … Visits are expected
from close friends. It is like the wedding
invitation card which has an announcement,
'No presents please,' when in reality they
do not mind envelopes containing cash … the
trend of discouraging condolence visits
started with aristocratic families who did
not want to mingle with ordinary people,
but now "many imitate the trend because they
either consider themselves aristocrats or seek
to display their self-esteem." 510 words.
