Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebration

London: Aires & Josephine Fernandes (ex Nairobi) renewed their marriage vows on 9th Nov’07 at St. Boniface Church Tooting and treated family and friends to a wonderful evening reception on 10th Nov. at Colliers Wood. Aires’s siblings/spouses: Tony/Claire (Canada) Dora/Augie (London) Alzira/John (Australia) made it more special, being reunited after 35 years. Family members also included Lusitan Carvalho (Josephine’s brother- in- law) nieces Audrey, Patricia, nephews Keith, Clifford, Brendon & families. MC Jacinto Fernandes announced the arrival of the elegant couple, followed by grandchildren David, Rachael, Ryan, Nicholas & Holly, to the wedding march played by son Steve & Calibre. UK: Hazel Gomes’ work to be auctioned at Christies on 21 Nov.

Hazel Gomes has the distinction of seeing her fashion illustrations coming up for sale on Nov 21, 2007 at the Christies auction house in London … Gomes born (1949) and raised in Goa has lived and worked in Europe as an artist for 30 years … she studied at Sir J.J.School of Bombay and St. Martins School Of Art, London … she has worked for Roberto Cavalli in Florence and Yves St. Laurent in Paris … she also interior decorated her house which appeared in 1989 Elle Decoration (titled "Goa West") American Vogue, and Maison Francais 1992. Australia: Conrad D'Souza: Five challenging Macklin
7 Nov: Heidelberg Leader (Melbourne, Aus). Six candidates have put up their hands to run for the marginal seat of Jagajaga in the 2007 federal election on November 24 … Liberal candidate Conrad D'Souza, of West Footscray, ran as a candidate in the 2004 election for the seat of Maribyrnong, where despite losing to Labor's Bob Sercombe, he had a 7.5 per cent swing in his favour on first preference votes.

Golf: John Fernandes keeps it in the family
7 Nov: Enfield Independent (UK). John Fernandes followed in his elder brother's footsteps by winning the St Ignatius College Golf Championship recently. The 15-year-old, from Edmonton, put in a pulsating round to claim victory at Whitehill Golf Club, in Ware. The St Ignatius College student's success came seven years after elder brother Thomas won the same title. Cliff Pereira: Ethnic communities mark slavery milestone

Florida: Oliviero Fernandes missing from casino ship
14 Nov: Miami Herald. The U.S. Coast Guard was searching Tuesday for a 44-year-old crew member who was reported missing from the gambling ship Island Adventure at about noon. Mzee Cordeiro always believed that 'Life was Good' and asked that we live our lives fully. He loved Tanzania and wanted to be at home for his final days. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Louisine Cordeiro. Daughter Sandra (Cordeiro) Galasso, her husband Philip Galasso and their children Joseph (7), Damian (5), and Marina (2). Son Norbert Cordeiro, his wife Anna Kessler Cordeiro, and their children Malaika (8) and Ezekiel (5). Catholics in Goa traditionally visit and console families of dead relatives, but the practice is fast vanishing … relatives are expected to sniffle or cry each time a mourner comes in, since failure to do so would be construed as lack of grief for the dead … Visits are expected from close friends. It is like the wedding invitation card which has an announcement, 'No presents please,' when in reality they do not mind envelopes containing cash … the trend of discouraging condolence visits started with aristocratic families who did not want to mingle with ordinary people, but now "many imitate the trend because they either consider themselves aristocrats or seek to display their self-esteem." 510 words.
