Aliens in Goa

proposed to be constructed in Carmona where the

causing apprehensions among the locals, and rightly so,
is that the settlement of 600 new families will not
only alter the village demography in the near
future, but put pressure on basic infrastructure
such as water, roads and garbage and sewage disposal.
And with such fears it is not surprising that Goa is slowly becoming a
colony of Goans with outsiders ruling the state.

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by CORNEL DACOSTA
JoeGoaUK provides a very interesting account
of the 1702 Maquinez Palace Complex in Goa.
There are excellent photographs of the complex
provided too. The origins of this Palace seem
to lie with brothers Diogo da Costa and
Christovan da Costa. In 1842, the building was
chosen to house parts of the Goa Medical College.
Today it has two developed areas and the photographs
made available depict the development rather well.
An unusual story on Goanet is titled American
makes Hindi Film on the Lives of Poor Goa Boys.
American Chris Smith shot the film in the first
half of 2006 and it has been featured in this month's
38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI)
held in Panjim, Goa.The film is best summed up thus:
"There's real humanity in the story...in that
there's an encounter between affluent-yet-unhappy
India and the other India which is poor but
optimistic...both have something to give the
other." The key character in the film is
Venkatesh Chavan who was literally picked off
the street in Panjim.
Why do so many Sea Harriers crash in India
and elsewhere? Indeed, the Sea Harrier fighter
aircraft have not been in a single war in
India in the past two decades but 16 out of
31 have crashed killing so many elite and
highly experienced pilots. In a very informative
article titled The Indian Navy's Deadly
Aircraft, we learn so much about the many
dilemmas posed by this particular aircraft.
It reminds me of the "flying coffin" that
epitomised a jet fighter used in Germany not
that long ago with a very sorry safety track record.
If Strictly Come Dancing has captured many TV
viewers in the UK it seems to have become
equally popular in Goa where it is now widely
available. As dancing among the Goans has
always been pretty popular, it would be interesting
to see how this new genre will influence
ballroom dancing in Goa.
For an excellent account of current Konkani
periodicals published in Devanagari, Roman
Kannada, and Perso-Arabic scripts, please
see material provided by Pratap Naik. I for
one was truly staggered by the sheer numbers
and varieties of the periodicals listed.
In a fairly introspective piece, Selma Carvalho
explores the dilemma of "how does one rear
a child born to agnostic parents when we
live in a theist world?" The piece is an
exploration of what it is like being surrounded
by "voices of God beckoning us to believe in
goodness, his munificence, his bounty and his
wrath..." But Selma, as a parent is unsure
about how to deal with such a situation
and seeks the views of Goanetters, and
indirectly, of Goan Voice (UK) readers to
explore some of her concerns.
And finally, a note of caution to all those
GV(UK) readers heading for Goa in this holiday
season. Goa apparently has the highest incidence,
per population ratio, of head injuries
mainly due to road accidents. About 200
neurosurgery operations are undertaken every
year at the Goa Medical College and Hospital
but the number of neurosurgeons in Goa is currently
just five and lower than in many other parts
of the world. The problem of the poor driving
skills of drivers in Goa is a cause of major
concern but will the latest news, as above,
deter some from holidaying in Goa?
