GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

What is preferable in Goa? Is it burial or cremation? This unusual discussion has emerged on Goanet recently. Increasingly, numbers opting for cremation have increased and substantial details are provided about what has led to this change compared to traditional burial including the Church's contemporary view compared to its historic view and the reasons for the latter. However, when cremation is opted for, is there any certainty that the ashes, when passed on to loved ones are actually genuine? As cremations in many places are increasingly streamlined (one every few minutes or so) in order to save on furnace costs, what guarantees are there that the ashes are not mixed up with others or indeed somebody else's when received? On another point, buried bodies in Goa are disinterred after three years and relatives are provided an option to place the bones in 'designated space' or have them disposed in a common deep pit. Is three years not too short a period for the remains to decompose adequately? Further, can more space for cemeteries not be purchased despite increased pressure on land? Well, well, well ever so many questions now needing Goan Voice (UK) reader opinion to Goanet please.

Related to the above, we learn that some 10,000 idols had been hidden beneath the earth in North and South Goa to protect them from the Portuguese invaders as well as smugglers. Such idols would now be worth a huge amount of money on the international market according to heritage expert Rajendra Kerkar.

Why does deeply conservative Saudi Arabia prohibit non-Muslim sites of worship on its soil but is happy to fund Muslim sites all over the world? Find out about this controversy and also about more liberal attitudes to this issue in other parts of the Gulf.

In a long and detailed article supplied by Pamela D'Mello we learn about Government land being sold to private vested interests. At a time when the purchase of land has literally reached fevered proportions and there are innumerable purchasers with ready cash, and also, much scope to sell properties where the titles may not be above board, there are more and more concerns about this fast moving situation. Pamela's article illustrates well the nature of many scams and also the need to understand what is now at stake in Goa.

Finally, an exceptionally good cultural guide to Goa has been provided by Frederick Noronha. This guide can be downloaded at click here. Equally fascinating, are details of "Goa Art Gallery" at http://goaartgallery.com/
