GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

A trip to San Francisco by the Archbishop of Goa has surprisingly drawn much attention on Goanet. The issue drew questions specifically about the mode of funding for the said trip and centrally whether a lot of money was wasted when it could have been used to help the poor in Goa. The varied responses received illustrated much mature thinking on an issue that became unexpectedly controversial.

The risk of communal violence in many parts of India is a perennial theme on Goanet. However, the most recent discussion on this theme has, once again, illustrated much maturity among Goanet posters and it is worth examining what exactly belies the nature of this particular conundrum. There are several in-depth opinions expressed under the general rubric of The Politics of Hate.

Did we know that there is a People's Movement against Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and that the convenor is Charles Fernandes? If Goan Voice (UK) readers are as intrigued as I was initially on this issue, please look up Goanet for a detailed account about the Provisions of The Special Economic Zone Act (2005) and the implications of this act for Goa.

For a week from Oct 25, 2007, there will be an exhibition on the "Portuguese Cinema--A Film Makers Perspective." This appears to be a novel and interesting display in Panaji by the Centro de Lingua Portuguesa/Instituto Camoes--Goa in collaboration with the Portuguese Dept., of Goa University. In particular, the films of Manoel de Oliveira will be featured. For further information, please ring 832 664 7737.

Likewise, there will be a Muglai Food Festival on 27 Oct. 07 at the International Centre, Dona Paula, Goa. There will be much food to be sampled with appropriate live background music. Details from: mkta@incentgoa.com or http://www.goadialogues.com or telephone Hasina Shaikh on 832 245 2805--10.

From Oct 23 to 27, 2007, The Directorate of Art and Culture, Govt. of Goa in collaboration with West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur will run a Multilingual Drama Festival in Curchorem, Goa. The aim of this festival is to build up the theatre movement, to encourage theatrical activities between artists and to develop their talents across the Indian states. For further information, please visit click here.

Details of the events above will hopefully encourage the thousands of visitors descending upon Goa in this new tourist/holiday season to take the opportunity to attend the many cultural activities taking place in Goa currently.
