WHO THE BLEEP CARES?
Weekly column by Selma Carvalho. Do leave your feedback at carvalho_sel@yahoo.com

Who the Bleep cares about lessons of childhood?

Two days ago I decided it was time for me to teach my toddler daughter an important lesson of childhood. We were in a shop and on top of her allotted quota of two lollipops, she wanted, with all the greed that only toddlers can display, another packet of sweeties. It was time to teach her that unlimited number of sweeties was bad for her teeth; that one had to make a choice in life; that one couldn’t have everything they wanted, or whatever lesson it is that mothers hope to teach their children when they deny them sweeties. So I said no.

She wailed and howled and kicked and cried until the wet tears pricked her tiny pink lips and made my heart churn like fresh butter but I stuck to my guns. Being in a shop, which also has a post office, of course I was met with the disapproving, judgmental looks of old British women wearing sensible shoes and men in tweed coats, who were quite sure I was being a bad mother. So we left the shop, all of us unhappy, most of all the shop-keeper, for I had upset the equilibrium in his shop.

We boarded the bus and sat in the stony silence that mothers and daughters sometimes share, she quite convinced that I was an evil witch and I smug, that I had taught my daughter “a lesson.” But as the cool, crisp wind of winter bruised against my cheek, my thoughts went back to when I was a little girl and my mother had taught me the same lesson. I must have been about six or seven because I remember it clearly to this day. We were in a general stores owned by a kindly Keralite man, as most stores were in the 1970s in Dubai where I spent most of my formative years. I had decided that I wanted more chocolate than I could eat for I had a deep fondness for the gooey, melty, cocoa delicacy. My mother had decided it was time for me to learn The Lesson. And so I had cried bitterly until the Keralite man insisted that I have the chocolates for free and my mother insisted that was not the point of The Lesson. When all recourse to reasoning and rationality failed, she scooped me up in her tired arms and took me home still screaming and howling.

Over the course of the years I have outgrown many things; my need to play with dolls, wear chunky jewellery, purple eye-shadow, the latest shoes, mini-skirts, all-night parties, toxic friends, men with long-hair but I have never outgrown my greed for chocolates and I still eat two bars every day. Which made me think, sitting in the red bus in the biting cold of London, next to my daughter, do we really learn any lessons in childhood? Most of the things we figure out by ourselves as we grow older and the rest is who we were and always meant to be.

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS
BY CORNEL DACOSTA

The slaughter of cows and consumption of beef is anathema to many Hindus in India and in Goa there are demonstrations on this issue from time to time. Some close Hindu friends of mine, will ignore such concerns in restaurants by claiming to eat English beef rather than Indian beef in UK restaurants!! However, to understand the complexity of this issue on the consumption of beef in India, please read 'Uma Bharati's Cow Agenda' by Ram Punyani. Click here.

From Marshall Mendonca, we have had innumerable accounts on Goanet of recent Hindu attacks on Christians in Orissa. While I have been somewhat inclined to see some of these accounts as perhaps marginally biased in their presentation, I invite Goan Voice (UK) readers to read an article titled Human Rights Watch--2009 Report India's Failure to Protect Minorities'. Click here.

Avelino D'Souza tells us in an article titled 'Pano Banjo Evolved in Goa' about a conference on 'Mantles of Myth' held in Jaipur recently. The conference looked at the legacy of the textile narrative traditions of India and how it can be adapted to modern realities. One of the speakers was Wendell Rodrigues, the fashion designer based in Goa. Wendell claimed that daring women dress styles offended the Christian sensibility of the Portuguese and forced edicts to get people to "cover themselves in bed sheets and finally in a coat/blouse with long sleeves---the pano and a single pleated sarong called the bhajo. Do find out more about Wendell's presentation and of several others. Click here.

Avelino D'Souza also informs us about 'The Grape Escape in Goa? This relates to a 4-day (Feb 5-8, 2009) extravaganza in Panjim, Goa The aim of which is to "encapsulate the vivacity of Goan lifestyle by highlighting its multicultural influences and artistic passions, thus branding Goa as a lifestyle destination." To find out more about this extravaganza click here.

Finally, from Ruby Goes, we have the full text of Barack Obama's Inaugural Address (20/01/09) that offers us much to reflect upon. Please click here.
