WHO THE BLEEP CARES?
Weekly column by Selma Carvalho.

Who the bleep cares about election-time Dream Girls?

When I was a young girl, Hema Malini, was the Dream girl for several reasons not the least of which was because she had acted in a movie of the same name. Indians were in love with this porcelain skinned beauty who exhibited a certain kutzpah for a generation that had barely found their way out of the pallau and purdah.

Everyone knew, though perhaps it wasn’t openly acknowledged that she and her leading man Dharmendra, were lovers. Dharmendra was already married with grown up sons. India wished the couple well. Who could argue with true love between those so blessed by the Gods? Their clandestine love affair finally found fruition in a love-child at which point Hema and Dharmendra wed in a secret ceremony. Both were Hindus and thus forbidden to take on a second spouse. In order to facilitate this unlawful act, they converted to Islam. That was many years ago for today, the once porcelain beauty who so many of us put on a pedestal, has been campaigning vociferously and vehemently for the BJP this election season 2009.

The BJP is of course the political wing of the RSS, whose raison d’être in India is to create a Hindustan that would redefine India as we know it today. The party targets mainly Muslims and Christians who according to their iconoclast Veer Sarvakar, do not belong to India for in his words their loyalties lie elsewhere in foreign countries. This brings to the fore the question, can we really divorce people from their politics? Can Hema Malini claim that she is a member of the BJP without being tainted by their communal policies.

Whichever country I have resided in, my morality has always had to find resonance with the politics of the party I support. In America, I was a liberal democrat, in England, I am labour. As an Indian, I can never be anything other than an unashamed Congress lackey. I don’t quite buy into this Sonal Shah theory that we are not to be judged by the associations we are members of. Sonal Shah managed to extricate herself from the tarnish of being a member of the VHP of America and although l’d like to give her the benefit of the doubt that indeed her personal code of ethics would not allow for communal hate-mongering, I cannot suspend rationality long enough to firmly believe that she was oblivious to the sort of politics that VHP (A) propagates.

Which brings me back to Hema Malini. It’s hard for me to understand why a girl who once embraced Islam to marry the man she loved now supports a party that has been directly responsible for the massacre of Muslims. It’s always an unsettling moment for me when the people who we thought we knew turn out to be quite something else altogether. More so when it is people we have idolised as stars and held up as a beacon of hope in an otherwise hopeless Indian celestial sky. Hema, sadly a Dream girl no more.

Finally, to be told by a medical specialist that one has cancer is indeed like receiving a death sentence according to many thus afflicted by the disease. Of course, many will fight cancer mentally as well as accept the many western therapies that are increasingly available but because of side effects, some will opt for herbal remedies instead. Fortunately for us on GV (UK) we can draw on the contribution on Goanet of a number of medical specialists who can advise on a) curable cancers and b) curable [cancers]in their advanced stages. For me, one such person is Dr Santosh Helekar, a Goan physician and researcher in the USA and whose writings I have held in high regard over a long period. It will certainly pain me to type out the lengthy urls for a) and b) above but I felt that it would be even more painful if I did not do so on this occasion in the interests of GV(UK) readers. So, here they are: click here and here.
Fortunately for us, Dr Helekar has indicated that he is amenable to people seeking further information and has provided his email address on Goanet for this purpose: chimbelcho@yahoo.com
