16 Apr: Ambajim, Margao, Goa. MICHAEL GOMES (Ex-East African Harbours Corp. Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania). Born 1924. Husband of Alda. Father of Fintan Noel/Maria Luiza, Allwyn/Marilyn. Brother of late Vincent Joao/Remiz Gomes, Philomena/late Luis Barreto; grandfather of Rodney, Louanne, Hannalee, Allison, Michael and Zachary. Funeral cortege will leave his residence at Ambajim on 21st Apr at 10.15 am for Eucharistic celebration at Holy Spirit Church, Margao, followed by burial.

20 Apr: Derby Evening Telegraph (UK). The family of Denyse Sweeney, who died under mysterious circumstances in Goa, are trying to trace a man said to have been with her the night she died. The sisters of Miss Sweeney claim they have been told she was with a man called Alex, who was British and from London, only hours before she was taken to hospital in a comatose state… The sisters say Miss Sweeney met Alex while in Goa doing voluntary work for an animal charity… Miss Sweeney had been in a causal relationship with a policeman and had been involved in an incident at a local bar with a man from London … a report in the Times of India from March last year claimed that, on average, one foreign tourist had died every week over the previous three years in Goa. It said: "Of the 161 deaths, the cause of death in 53 cases is not known"…

Charter flights fly high this tourist season
21 Apr: Times of India. Despite challenges from the Southeast Asian countries in the tourism sector, Goa has been able to cross last year's figures in charter flight arrivals. Statistics compiled by the state tourism department suggest that so far Goa has received 910 charter flights compared to 900 last year… 520 charter flights from Russia with 95,000 tourists followed by 200 flights from UK with 48,000 tourists. Germany has brought 8,000 tourists in 50 charter flights. Thirty flights from Netherlands brought 2,000 tourists to Goa while Norway brought 5,000 tourists in 28 charter flights … 332 words.  click here

A charity worker whose family were told she died of a drug overdose in Goa was found to have no drugs in her system, it has emerged… Speaking after the inquest on Tuesday, her sister Maureen, 43, said: 'After Denyse died, friends who had seen her in Goa said she had been with this man called Alex on the night before she died. A conclusion by Carillion of the investigation into alleged bullying, harassment and discrimination by workers at Great Western Hospital is expected to be concluded on April 27. Court move by drug case Scot James Toner to end 'legal limbo' in Goa
21 Apr: BBC. A Glasgow man who has been held in Goa without trial for 34 months is taking his case to the High Court in India. James Toner, 47, was arrested in May 2009 for possessing a large quantity of hashish - a claim he denies. Since he was detained, police officers involved in his case have been charged with drug-related corruption. Mr Toner is now out on bail, but cannot leave Goa until his case goes to trial … Since his arrest, Mr Toner has appeared in court in Goa 80 times, with the case being continued each time… 904 words.  click here

Mike Masala refuses to come to Goa
20 Apr: Times of India. The prime British witness in the Scarlett Keeling murder case, Michael Mannion, has refused to travel to Goa to depose in court. However, he informed the CBI that he would be able to give his deposition from the UK through video conferencing. Mannion, popularly known in the coastal belt as Mike Masala - who was feeling "stuck" in Goa after the state police refused to lift their lookout notice against him despite being a prime witness in the case-has now informed the CBI that, "Appearing as a prosecution witness will mean that I have to take time away from my employment. I expect reimbursement for any loss of earnings and expenses incurred." …  click here
