Obituary

Death: Zeno Fernandes

7 May: Cancun, Mexico. ZENO FERNANDES (born Zanzibar, 1940). Husband of Estrella. Father of Alvin, Tania and Rui [Mexico]. Brother of late Nora and Douglas [Manu] & his wife Priscilla & children Tracy, Daniel and Roscoe [UK]. Nephew of Helen Vaz & children Nicky, Wilma and Clara [Goa]; Juliana & children Wisdom and Hubert. Son of JC Fernandes (late) & Mother Idiana (late).
After finishing his senior studies (Saint Joseph's Convent School) Zanzibar he went to Kenya to study Architecture where he won a Scholarship to Mexico. His Hockey prowess won him a place in the Mexican Hockey Team; a few years later he earned himself a place as the overall Hockey Coach of The Mexican Olympic Team......the rest as they say is History. [Zanzibar to the World Olympics in Mexico]. He will always be remembered for his famous sketches/paintings of Zanzibar and beyond + his hearty laughter.

The Aliens and Border Service (SEF) detained a citizen extradited from the UK who is suspected of being linked to an alleged conspiracy that falsified documents to assign Portuguese nationality to foreigners … The arrest of the suspect, who has been in custody, is related to the operation Magic Book, investigating a criminal organization that was allegedly dedicated to the fraudulent acquisition of Portuguese nationality for citizens born in Goa, Daman and Diu, according to a statement. New York Indian Film Festival opens with tribute to 1960s Goan musicians

The 16th New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) opened Saturday night at Skirball Center for Performing Arts with Nachom-ia Kumpasar (Let’s Dance to the Rhythm) … The film takes place in the Goa of the 1960s and ‘70s… The central characters of composer/bandleader/trumpet player Lawry and vocalist Dona are patterned after Chris Perry and Lorna Cordeiro …  click here

Babush Monserrate's custody extended to probe drug used on minor

10 May: Times of India. The Goa children's court on Monday further remanded St Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate alias Babush to three-day police custody. In its remand application before the children's court, the police said the accused was not disclosing details about the drugs or intoxicants administered to the minor survivor in the alleged rape case and sought for 10-day custody…  click here

Carol Gracias: Wonder why career stops after becoming mother

9 May: IANS. Carol Gracias broke convention when she walked the fashion runway in March with a baby bump and the supermodel says that Indian women never shy away from celebrating womanhood unlike the common perception. She also doesn't understand why a woman's career should stop when she gets pregnant… Born in a Goan Catholic family, Carol is a name to reckon with in the Indian fashion industry and is one of the highest paid models in India… Carol, whose is married to a French journalist and businessman Samuel Ziza, again walked the fashion runway last week along with a few other expecting mothers for skincare oil …  click here

FC Goa appeal against 'unprecedented' sanctions

9 May: Times of India. The Goan franchise was stunned into disbelief when the Indian Super League (ISL) Regulatory Commission imposed a Rs 11 crore fine, docked them 15 points and banned co-owners Dattaraj Salgaocar and Shrinivas Dempo for three and two years respectively for boycotting the ISL final prize distribution ceremony and bringing the league into disrepute… FC Goa filed their appeal before the ISL Appeals Panel comprising former Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Kshitij R Vyas on Sunday and remained confident that they have enough grounds to get the order overturned or at least get the sanctions minimized…  click here

Harking Back: Jesuit missions to Lahore and the first wooden church

8 May: Dawn (Pakistan). The first church was built of wood and was erected in 1591 by the Jesuits …The Jesuits in Goa had come with the mission of trying to convert the Muslims of the subcontinent to Christianity, and so it was that the very first Jesuit mission came to Lahore in 1580 to meet the emperor… The support within the Lahore court of the Jesuit cause came in the shape of a second mission to Lahore led by Father Leitao, who built Lahore’s first church… 1185 words.  click here

Goa's charter traffic remains flat

10 May: Business Standard. The number of foreign tourists visiting Goa on charter flights has remained flat this year, signalling weak demand from its main source market — Russia. The state received 783 international flights between October 2015 and April 2016 — the lowest in five years. This is 11 per cent lower than 862 flights it received in the last season (between October 2014 and May 2015). This season, 161,343 tourists visited Goa via charter flights. During the last season, the figure was 159,497, compared with around 260,000 each in the two previous seasons…  click here
