15 Oct: Times of India. Potholes and BRICS. By Vivek Menezes. Goa takes world centre stage this weekend when Presidents Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia, Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Michael Temer of Brazil join India’s own Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the eighth annual BRICS summit. Others in attendance will be Myanmar’s icon and foreign minister Aung San Suu Kyi, Nepal’s new Prime Minister Prachanda, as well as Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina… Let one single Russian or Brazilian or Burmese stray even a few steps outside the skin-deep subterfuge, and he or she will find a moonscape of derelict, severely potholed roads and highways, lined with ever-accumulating piles of garbage. BRICS is all about aspiring for a better future, but in the meanwhile who is going to fix the present? 775 words.  click here

'Cyril Almeida was looking to write a book about his family roots’

15 Oct: Times of India. Days after being blacklisted on the Exit Control List (ECL) by the Pakistan government, Dawn's assistant editor, Cyril Almeida, has been his witty self, humouring his followers on Twitter with jokes and satire… . Almeida's calm composure in the eye of the storm probably stems from his ancestral roots in the coastal state of Goa. While in Goa, he was hoping to find his roots… Almeida was interested in writing a book about his family roots. He was intrigued by the houses in Goa, especially as we walked the streets of Fontainhas. He loved the crab xec-xec at Venite's and enjoyed a chilled glass of beer …  click here

Ignored for long, the jack of fruits is finally getting plucked

14 Oct: Times of India. By Paul Fernandes. Jackfruit has been extremely underutilized despite its potential and availability, but this is slowly changing, as the nutrition-packed fruit is being tapped in Goa for its multi-purpose uses. Jackfruit tree owners would leave the strongly-smelling fruits to rot on trees. Now, small platforms along highways and roadside houses displaying the wonder fruit, that scientists say thrive in the face of climate change, are on the rise during the season. In Goa, self help groups (SHGs) have started making jackfruit chips to capitalize on the craze for crunchies. "Just three to four years back, we had hardly one or two SHGS, now, that number has risen to 50," said secretary of Botanical Society of Goa, Miguel Braganza…  click here

The Goa connection with the UN

15 Oct: Herald. By Alexandre Barbosa. Hidden in a mass of information available on the next Secretary General of the United Nations was a single quote from the man himself, Antonio Guterres, establishing a Goan link. He was quoted by The Wire some months ago as saying, “My wife was born in Goa. Her father was a doctor and the family moved back to Lisbon after it became part of India… But we have been back to visit, to see where she was born, where she was baptised.” The search of who was the wife and where in Goa was she born led Herald not too far from its present office. For, Catarina Vaz Pinto, the wife of Guterres and currently an elected councillor of the Camara Municipal de Lisboa, was born in Panjim, in the Portuguese Military Hospital in Campal, about 18 months before the Portuguese colonial rule ended in Goa… Her father, Dr Luis Vaz Pinto, was a military doctor who was posted in Goa and came to the then Portuguese colony along with his wife Maria Jose. “ After finishing his medical school, my father was recruited for the military service in Goa, where he served as a medical doctor,” Vaz Pinto said…  click here

Goa's mini-Russia mirrors dilemma

16 Oct: The Telegraph. … For India, the 17th edition of the annual leaders' summit with Russia comes at a time when their strategic partnership has developed wrinkles, but is also set to deepen. It's a paradox equally mirrored in the tiny state hosting Putin, which depends economically on Russian visitors so much that many store signs are in both English and Russian, yet blames these tourists for ills ranging from drug-peddling to corruption… Over one lakh Russian tourists visit Goa each year - the highest from any country - and many of the state's most popular bars - like Tito's and Mambo's - are run by Russians [sic] now settled here… 982 words.  click here

Christians in the eye of the storm

13 Oct: The Irish Catholic. When it comes to the disputed region of Kashmir, there is little space for unity between India and Pakistan… For the unity of purpose one must pinpoint the Catholic Cathedral of St Mary in Jammu … the Church has not been found wanting in its efforts… October 16 has been declared as a day of prayer for Christians across all India for peace in Kashmir (in a call similar to that of Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai)… Beyond prayers and soothing words, it is the Catholic Church which has also been to the forefront of direct action on behalf of the people of Kashmir… As The Irish Catholic went to press this week, a sense of calm was returning to much of Kashmir, though the Church’s efforts were not winding down as a consequence…  click here

‘Know Your Cabbie’ if you need to get around in Goa

15 Oct: Times of India. In Goa, tourists and locals alike are forced to rely on either their familiarity with a taxi operator, or to hire the first, visible cab. With taxi operators in the state not allowing app-based cab services like Ola and Uber to enter the market, there is no other way to book your ride… And its not only tourists, but also locals, who have no other mode of booking a taxi, specially at odd hours. This allows taxi operators to dictate the terms, and the fares…  click here
15 Oct: Times of India. Driving tourists away, not to their destinations … These prices are ridiculous and hardly affordable. The worst part is that these are apparently government notified…Is our government simply giving into the demands of a mafia-like union that uses violence to drive away competition? …  click here
