Christa D’Souza: How I lost my lip filler virginity at 57
24 Sep: The Sunday Times (UK). If you could change one bit of your face, what would it be? For me, it’s my lips. My thin lips which, with age, just keep getting thinner and thinner. To make it worse, I have an unconscious habit of pursing them … But what to do? No lip filler in the history of mankind has ever looked right on anyone, and the idea of having an implant or a philtrum lift is just … well, a bridge too far. Lips have become the latest body-part fixation, thanks in no small part to Kylie Jenner whose “confession” about using fillers two years ago led to many clinics reporting a spike in inquiries for the procedure. The Private Clinic of Harley Street has seen a 30% increase in lip fillers over the past three months alone… I was pointed in the direction of Dr Suha Kersh, whose speciality, would you believe, is the mouths of middle-aged women such as myself… 1159 words click here Christa D’Souza is the daughter of Stanley and Baroness D’Souza, Lord Speaker. Soaking in Sausage
24 Sep: Herald. Antonio Da Silva or Souko from Goa Velha is famous in the state and amongst the Goan community in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and of course London for his smoked sausages. Now, in his sixties, he has spent most of his life preparing sausages learning from his grandfather who started it under the Portuguese Rule. … “We make around 5000 sausages every other day. We do not go out and sell them. People who want them come over and place orders.” … The pigs are sourced from a farm in old Goa and private farms in Diwar but he admits it’s getting tough to get good and healthy ones… He prepares four types of sausages - less fat, no fat, fat and just skin… The popularity of his sausages has meant that he sends around 4,000 pieces -- three times every month -- to Mumbai. To London around (at least) 1,500 sausages are sent regularly. From Dhobi talao to Swindon, Goans away from its shores manage to stay in touch thanks to his Saukos sausages… 562 words. click here 21 May 2016. Navhind Times. Odette Mascarenhas and Manu Chandra deconstruct delicious foods from an era gone by
24 Sep: Mid Day. Food historian Odette Mascarenhas and chef Manu Chandra want you to challenge what the culinary arts can be at the Serendipity Arts Festival. Where we see a serving of bharlele bhangde, Odette Mascarenhas and Manu Chandra see art at its most ephemeral. Mascarenhas says that the dish, which was historically made in the homes of Goa's Goud Saraswat Brahmins, has all the drama, texture, and sensory appeal as any work of art. "The stuffed mackerel is wrapped in banana leaf and fried. You have to cut the twine made from the spine of a coconut leaf that holds the parcel together; then unwrap the banana leaf and see the juices of the mackerel. It's a feast for the eyes, and all your other senses. Whoever could have thought of these combinations?" says this Goa-based food historian and critic. It is this philosophy that has paved the way for the culinary arts at Serendipity Arts Festival, which will be held in Goa from December 15 to 22… 747 words. click here 23 Sep: The Goan. Charter slots: Goa’s Russian connection likely to be affected
25 Sep: The Goan. The paucity of parking slots and berths at the Goa International Airport for Charter flights has caused ripples at a promotion show in Moscow, Russia with Tourism Minister Manohar "Babu" Ajgaonkar admitting that one of the primary concerns raised by tour operators in Russia was the lack of landing slots. "Over 300 travel trade members visited our pavilion and several charter companies requested for policies to grant more parking berths at the Goa International airport to increase tourist arrivals," Ajgaonkar said in a statement … Tour operators back home have already begun to raise alarms saying if Airports Authority of India (AAI) doesn't issue landing slots for Charter flights scheduled to bring foreign tourists to the State this season, the entire season could suffer… click here

In 1942, this is how a Goan family trekked through wartime Burma to escape to India
24 Sep: Scroll. By Yvonne Vaz Ezdani. A recent book chronicles the great Indian exodus from Burma, which took place by sea and by land, in ships and on foot. In 1942, this is how a Goan family trekked through wartime Burma to escape to India. Not everyone was lucky enough to get away by the few boats or planes that the British government had arranged to evacuate the mass of people to India. Europeans and Eurasians were given priority and many Goans passed off as Anglo-Indians because they were Christians who spoke English fluently and wore Western clothes. Some of them possessed Portuguese passports too. Many other Indians were denied berths on the ships and even some able-bodied young Goan men were not permitted to get on ships or planes with other family members… Donald Menezes, who was a lively teenager at that time, writes about his experiences of the trek quite matter-of-factly and without any self-pity… Excerpted with permission from New Songs of the Survivors: The Exodus of Indians from Burma, Yvonne Vaz Ezdani, Speaking Tiger Books. 2492 words. click here To buy a copy of the book, £3.78.
