Dr Agnelo Fernandes

Dr Agnelo Fernandes was born in Margao, Goa, the son of the late Dr.Joao Caetano Sacrafamilia Fernandes (Raia, Rachol,Salcette) and Lucy Fernandes (Orda, Candolim, Bardez). At the age of four he moved to Nairobi where he attended St.Theresa’s Primary School. Six years later he moved to England

LOCAL GP RECOGNISED IN NEW YEAR HONOURS LIST
 

Dr Agnelo Fernandes, Medical Director of NHS Direct South London and GP at Parchmore Medical Centre, Thornton Health, Croydon, Surrey has been honoured with an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list for “Services to Healthcare”. Dr. Agnelo Fernandes said “I am absolutely delighted and thrilled. Such an honour is really a tribute to all NHS staff who are working to modernise the health service.”


Over the past 10 years Dr Fernandes has played a leading role in originating concepts and being a catalyst for developing NHS services in Croydon working with motivated teams of clinicians and managers. He is a strong advocate for promoting healthcare modernisation programmes and enthusiastically supports the development of new health services. In particular he has actively contributed to the development of NHS Direct which has a centre based at Mayday Hospital, the Croydon NHS Walk in Centre, Croydoc (GP co-op) and the Well Family Service in North Croydon.

He has also had a significant role in different teams for the successful implementation of numerous pilot projects, involving IT and different ways of working within general practice. His own GP practice has received recognition and national awards for being innovative and forward thinking in these and other areas of patient care. He has a strong interest in Information Technology and has been a key driver in promoting the use of IT by health professionals, moving towards paperless consultations, with an emphasis on improving the quality of healthcare to patients. As a GP Appraiser he has played a pivotal role in supporting GPs to complete their Appraisal information electronically online.

He continues to be actively involved in a number of different healthcare improvement groups in Croydon, across South West London and nationally, most notably in improving the quality and responsiveness of Emergency Care and Out of hours health services to patients through a more joined up approach. As a result he is often a speaker at conferences, and has also provided advice to health officials from other countries.

Dr. Agnelo Fernandes, aged 43 yrs is married to Corinne and has three school aged children - Oliver, Lydia and Joshua. He has been a GP at Parchmore Medical Centre, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Surrey for nearly twelve years. He is also currently a member of the London Modernisation Board, the Medical Director of NHS Direct South London, Assistant Medical Manager of Croydoc (GP Co-op), a Trainer of future GPs, a GP Appraiser, a Clinical Governance Facilitator for Croydon PCT North locality and a lead for developing quality systems for Clinical Governance, Patient confidentiality and Information Security in different organisations he is involved with.

On completion of his secondary schooling at Spencer Park School, Wandsworth, London, he attended King’s College, London for his BSc and pre-clinical studies and graduated from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, London in 1987. He completed his vocational training in general practice in Croydon and his qualifications include a BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, AKC, MBBS, DRCOG, DCCH, MRCGP. His GP practice was awarded NHS Beacon status for the use of Information Technology in 1999, and was previously a Demonstrator for London for implementing integrated IT systems, as well as winning or being finalists in other national award categories, and participating in national NHS modernisation programmes in recent years.

He has also actively contributed to local, regional and national forums including as a member of North Croydon PCG Board as the IT and Education lead, a member of the London Emergency Care Board, .the national NHS Direct Healthcare Guide editorial board, the national NHS Direct Online Advisory Group and the Protocol Advisory Group (ENT) for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). He was involved in the pilot phase and national press launch of the online NHS Appraisals Toolkit for GPs & Consultants in England for the Department of Health (DOH). More recently he has given presentations for the launch of Appraisals & Revalidation of doctors in the U.K. for the General Medical Council (GMC).

MBE for GP

A Thornton Heath GP was rewarded for his services to medicine and healthcare when he received an MBE from the Queen last week.

Dr Agnelo Fernandes, a GP at Parchmore Medical Centre, was awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List.

He travelled to Buckingham Palace last Wednesday to be formally invested.

Dr Fernandes is medical director of NHS Direct South London and assistant medical manager of Croydoc, the GP out of hours service in Croydon.

He is also involved in teaching and training doctors as well contributing to the modernisation of the NHS.
