The
Goan Association (UK) held its 25th Annual Sports Day
on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August, 2004 This annual
event has always been scheduled for the same holiday.
The
1979 inaugural GOA Sports Day was the brainchild of Peter
Rodrigues, who was then the Sports Secretary. That event
was held at Willesden Green Stadium. Since then Peter
Rodrigues has organised and run the annual event. It was
therefore fitting for Flavio Gracias, President, to award
him a memento - an inscribed tankard.
Over
1500 people attended the GOA Annual Sports Day. The Chief
Guest at the Anniversary occasion was Seraphino Antao
(a former gold medalist of the Commonwealth Games) who
opened the proceedings at 1.00 p.m. Dr. Wilfred De Souza,
the ex-Chief Minister of Goa, together with his wife Grace,
were also present.
Participation
in all the events was the best ever and it was delightful
to see so many youngsters taking part in this year's events.
It is hoped that parents will encourage their children
to practice and participate in future. The Sports Day
is an outstanding event for the whole family and for all
ages - it gives everyone an opportunity to participate
at their own level and to mix with others. The Day was
well supported by a number of excellent food stalls, where
fresh Goan Fayre satisfied the palates of even the most
discerning whilst Greg Carvalho and his team quenched
the thirsts of all at their bar. For those who had some
energy left at the end of the day, a disco was held in
the school hall. Bosco Saldanha took the opportunity to
canvas for views on the future direction of the Goan Association
- a review which he and Alvaro Collaco are progressing
and they are still open to further submissions.
